With spring just around the corner my thoughts are turning to repairing my lawn. Last summers drought killed large areas of my lawn and I'm wondering what is the best way to repair the damaged areas? Are we looking at ripping up the dead grass and re-sodding or will spreading seed do the trick? Any recommendations on a lawn service that can come in and repair the damage?

Like I said to IMJ, be a man and do it yourself. In about two weeks, get one of those sharp rakes, dig up the dead grass and mulch up the soil. Go buy some grass seed (shade seed or sun seed depending on the amount of light the area gets) and plant it. Water the piss out of it for a couple weeks, then fertilize it. Overseed it again a couple of times throughout the spring. By next year, you will have hefty grass there. And you will feel pretty good about growing it yourself.

Just try to keep it out of Norton's radar.

Man, I thought I made a freudian slip until I saw that you edited my quote. That's okay, like any journalist, it's acceptable to take liberties with the facts.

My yard is 3/4 of an acre, honestly I'd rather spend my weekend doing other activities. I'm 45 years old and at a point in my life where I'd rather pay others to do it. It's just not worth the aches and pains I'd feel for the next 3 days. I'm mean come on, you talking to a guy who likes girlie martini's. Big Grin

That's also one of life's advanages to growing old. You can hire someone to do it for you.

Yoss-

Try Dave's Lawncare. 665-8570 Dave Pokorny is in Carol Stream, but grew up in Glen Ellyn and does a lot of houses in this area.

We also like
Green Field Landscaping
Jessie Duran

They work hard and do a very nice job.

Unfortunately, since I am too cheap to water sufficiently all summer long, Jesse and his guys have to come back and clean up the tumbleweeds for me every spring.

But things are going to be different this year, I swear...

This really is alot easier than you think. Follow Fan's directions above...but to them I would add buying a bunch of good quality topsoil. Once you cleared the area, get a garden weaselish kind of thing and rough up the suspect, throw down the topsoil, level it, throw seed down...and top it off with a shitload of peat. This will keep it moist.

Do it yourself you lazy @ss. You're giving old guys like me a bad name.

Been talking to my wife?

Chances are I will end updoing it myself. When I'm in traction, I hope you and Fan feel guilty.

It's almost 1 p.m., time for my nap.

Yoss, I will be hiring one of the two guys on this GEBB to cut my lawn, so I can spend the time watching FAN pass out from heat exhaustion while Clam and I drink his beer.

I don't get it, what is so bad about hiring someone to do your lawn? Yoss, it is in the way you sell it to your wife...You need to sell it in a way that she sees it is her best interest to have you hire a service.

I could point out to her that she would need to listen to me whine from my sore back.

We did our own mulching two years ago and we both were sore for a week. The problem with aging is not that you can't do it, it's the aftermath. I weight train 3 times a week and run at least twice a week. When I push my self, I can run 10 miles in less than 90 minutes. Of course my knees ache for days and I look like Fred Sanford walking around. On the positive side, I get a runners high that lasts for hours.

At this point in my life, I would prefer to hire someone else and save the wear and tear on my body.

Since you live so close to the Arten klan, maybe you could get Dave to give you guys a deal.......As for the wife, tell her that getting someone else to cut the lawn will allow you to take long drives with her in the TT......

I called the two guys listed here. Dave never got back to me, but the guy swampdawg recommended did.

Only his company is now "Golden Sun Landscaping" instead of "Green Field Landscaping"

And his name is now Juan, not Jessie.

Anyway, he's going to do my lawn, so I'll let you know how it is.

My wife and I moved to GE nine months ago; after years of apartment and condo living, this is our first house and I'm blown away by the amount of work! Thanks to our careers and other commitments, we haven't had time to deal with upkeep, so finding someone to take care of the lawn is a real blessing.

Cheers!
Drew

Howdy Drew,
Well, I was confused by you comment about Jessie becoming Juan, and all that, so I asked the missus, and she told me that the last time we called Greenfield - back in the spring - Jessie gave her a new business card...his business is still called Greenfield, but sure enough, he has a new phone number.

All that to say, I don't know who Juan is, but maybe Jessie's old partner or something. So if things don't turn out just right with Juan, do give my young friend Jessie a try. We like him and his guys very much.

and furthermore...

The missus just found an older Greenfield business card that listed both Jessie Duran and Juan Duran.

Looks like maybe Juan decided to strike out on his own.

Good luck Drew, and please post to let us know how things turned out.
