I know this topic has been discussed a couple times over the years, but I have not found any old threads discussing my issue. I need a landscaper that can roto-till a couple areas of my lawn and plant grass seed. We have called a number of companies but none have responded. This is not a huge job but we do need someone who knows what they are doing. Any suggestions?

3 years ago I bought a house with a large yard that had been unattended for years. I had Juan's Landscaping come in and clear it out including rototilling and planting grass seed in a fomer garden bed. I thought they did a great job and found Juan to be a very professional and friendly man. He said he has a lot of clients in Glen Ellyn. The phone number I have for him is (630)440-0760.

Try Pancho’s Lawn Maintenance 630-790-2124 or 630-244-8429. He is local and cares for many Glen Ellyn lawns. He will do anything you need him to do and is very reasonable. I highly recommend him! The 244 number is his cell and I find it is easier to get hold of him on that one. He does go to Mexico for part of the winter so you may need to wait until after April 1st.

On that same topic (sort of)-has anyone had good luck using sod in a fairly shady back yard? We tried the grass seed route last year, but it didn't do too well (plus have 2 active dogs doesn't help). Does sod work well in shady areas? I don't mind shelling out the $$, but I want to make sure it takes.

Hermsdaughter-
Our landscaper sodded our yard about 4 years ago and since that time Mr. Scott reseeds the lawn with athletic field mix every spring. The field mix, which was designed to withstand football players, seems to give our grass the strength to hold up to our 100 pound Golden Retriever and his friends having dog playtime.

Thank you both for your quick replies. Both Juan and Pancho have been called and we look forward to their estimates. Your recommendations are really appreciated.

I read your post and was wondering if you could share how the phone calls went with Pancho's and Juan's as I am going to be calling both of them. We just bought a home and it now appears the previous owners did not have a "green thumb". Need to revive this great yard.

Hi Lhamm:

Pancho did not return my call, but I did call a couple weeks ago and he may have been out of the country. Juan's came out right away but never returned with an estimate.

I ended up using Ferro's Landscaping. 630-301-1293. They did a great job with a spring clean-up, sodding and mulching. The price was very reasonable, and we are very pleased. They do quite a bit of work in Glen Ellyn, and I highly recommend them.

Can you tell us what the lot size is and how much he charged? Last guy I used was awful with a capital AWF.

A lot of people in our area use Yard Medics at 630-562-1900, J.R.B. We don't since we do our own, but they appear to do a good job for others. Steve is the owner and you can tell him I sent you - name and neighborhood should do it.

Almost none of the lower priced landscapers know how to correctly prune most shrubs, though - be forewarned. And mulching this early slows the warming of the soil as perennials are emerging. I'd wait at least a few more weeks.

Happy Easter! Smile

Jaun passed away in Jan. but his family is still
running the business. I believe it's Pedro who is in charge now. We felt Jaun was a little high in pricing.

We are using Ferro's this year. Only started with the Fall clean up and we were very pleased. They put in a neighbors paver driveway last year and it was very reasonable and beautiful.

They charged us $160 for the clean up and it's going to be $22 for mowing. Last year we had our daughters friend mow for $30. (Law school's expensive. Smile )

We called Pancho, and he showed up right away and gave us a good quote to re-seed our backyard. He said he'd come back to do the work on Friday or Saturday and lone behold, when we got home on Thursday it had already been done!

The Fall clean up did not include mulch. They cleaned out all the gardens removing leaves, branches, cut back plants and mowed. They also cleaned the gutter. When they finished there was not one leaf to be found!

We are saving our pennies and hope to have them do our driveway with pavers this summer.

J.R.B.:

Freddy from Ferro's charged us $180 for the clean-up. Our lot is 66 x 300, with a number of trees (and many more branches on the ground). The mulch did not pose a problem for our daffidills, as they popped up right through the mulch and are looking healthy. I believe coring and fertilizing the yard were $60 each, and the price to mow is $24, which is $11 cheaper than we paid a different company last year. Very satisfied so far.

Does anyone have a good way of getting these guys to return your phone calls. I have left two messages with Yard medics and Ferros, each message 24 hours apart.

If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them. Hopefully not all yard maintenance companies have this poor of customer service.

Thanks
Lance

Pancho is very dependable and honest. He arrives on the same day and time each week. I feel his price is very reasonable.

You are getting into the busy time. Sometimes its a matter of finding someone who is not fully booked.

We just used Beutke Landscaping. (630) 546-6045 Lon is pretty fast. We have used him for the past 2 years.

I have a fantastic landscaper. They have been here for 4 days now, cleaning, edging, trimming. When it rained he came over to tell me they couldn't come because of the weather. I'll post his number in a bit after I get it out of the car.

O.k.

It's called J&E Landscaping. The number is 630-379-4070. He is very good and eager to work. His prices are very reasonable. If you ever read my posts, you know I don't say nice things just for the heck of it, recommendations are rare! Wink

He helped me find my property line markers today that have been overgrown for many years. (As I wanted to make sure I wasn't cutting down my neighbor's stuff.) To make a long story short, I re-claimed almost 10 feet on the west side of my lot that was becoming over grown. He even cut out and hauled away all of the overgrown crap at no additional charge.
