Since the days of rain I began discovering big back ants in my 2nd story bedroom. Never more then a few at a time. I thought the rain was driving them inside from around the windows and used bug spray. But mainly at night I find 4 or 5 aand I worry this might be something more!!! eeks.
Any ideas??? I need advice on where to start.

Interesting that buggy has ants.....

We had a similiar problem in our Lombard home prior to moving to GE. They were the kind that when you smash them, you heard a audible crunch, they were big.....We found out we had an infestation in the wall. A colony was built in the old style styrofoam insulation that was in the walls. We had to rip out our bathroom walls and have the installation replaced and fumigated. what a pain that was.

Is the bedroom near a bathroom, or a tree outside overhanging the roofline?

Why did I think pancakes were involved?

just a co-inky-dink that the Buggy family has ants, and I hate them.

Yes, they are big and nearly indestructable. The wall is not near a bathroom but there is a tree.

What do I do? Who do I call?

Go to Home Depot and ask them what the Ortho product is that gets rid of ants. It is a bit involved, but it works. I think GEMom2 also recommended this in another thread.

That is nasty gross! I hate ants... more so than spiders! Frown

The thing that sucks about ants is that unless you get to the source (queen), they don't go away. Took me forever to get rid of them (mine were outdoor).

If they have only started coming in since the rain, they may have been forced to find a new home. There is this stuff called Terro... home depot sells it. Unfortunately, it didn't help my outdoor situation but it works great on indoor ants. It's worth a try. Good luck!

Buggy - These are Carpenter Ants, by the sound of it. They will burrow and nest in wet and rotting wood. If you see some, there are likely many (many!) more. Google them to get more information - but you have wet wood somewhere and they have found it!

Good luck!

I got one of those emails that contains what sounds like silly, but simple tricks for household hints. This one just may work:
Get Rid of Ants:Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," & can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, esp. if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
It it works, let us know.

GEMom, that is what I think to. So do I call a bug guy? or a carpenter? start inside or outside?

We do the ortho stuff, but these ants ARE different.

Have you got firewood stacked in the garage or near the house? What about wood chips for landscaping. Any dead trees next to the house? You may have a leak in your gutters that allows water to seep into the wall of your house. Did the sill of the house get wet from the rains. All will attract ants if the wood is wet.

We had this problem and called Terminex. Well worth the money. But you also have to find the source of the problem.

We had some in our home when we bought it. We had some terminator dude come out and take care of it. they were in the crawlspace up against an outside wall. He said if you listen real close to where you think they live , you will hear a kind of tissue paper noise....or was it saran wrap??? anyway...it was creepy and he killed them all....dead.

UUUGGHH! You people are wiggin' me out! Eek I'm beginning to get the heebie-jeebies. Think maybe I'll take a sleep remedy tonight so I'll sleep through the night and not hear anything.

I read that either baking soda, vinegar or coffee grounds acts as a barricade. But if it is within walls, yikes-that's got be harder. I think my mom had them in a rafter in her attic. My brothers tore off the roof years ago (due to tear off reasons and not ants) and said they had seen a bunch living up there but they soon left after cleaning and a new roof (plywood, etc.) I would predict most of them died if they were under my family's care.

I always thought ants and bees like heat?

Diatomaceous earth, the kind used in swimming pool filters, is a good barrier method too. But you already have an infestation. Call Terminex or Orkin!
