The GE news has a very comprehensive article about this insect that is currently resting for the winter on many trees' branches. I have noticed the telltale bags/pods on arborvitaes in the area. The stand of trees at the corner of 53 outside HealthTrack looks nearly dead from its infestation.

Check your trees if you like them.

We found them at the end of the block.

What you gotta to to get rid of them?

Route what?

You have to cut them out of the tree and burn them. Michigan has tons of them and I just had to do that this weekend with some cherry trees we have up there. Started a fire in the fire pit and bye-bye bag worms.

The discussion in the paper is extensive - from hand picking this winter to planting asters as those flowers attract wasps that lay eggs that devour the larva. My neighbor's tree was so bad, he decided it would be easier to just cut it down.

GER, these are the insects that form an individual bag and then resemble pine cones. The MA rep said you could just drop them into a bucket of soapy water and then flush them. Though the fire would be more exciting!
