We are remodeling our master bath and we're not sure what kind of tub to get. We don't want a whirlpool. Please tell us what you love and hate about your tub. We're especially confused about the whole cast-iron, acrylic, fiberglass debate. We've always had cast-iron and we like it, but are acrylic and fiberglass just as good. How easy are they to clean? How well do they keep their finish? Thanks!

i would say cast iron, but watch the dimensions. i remodeled thorough one of those 1-day places last year, and got stiffed on the tub. my new tub (which i signed for, so forget fighting them on it) it is the "new" standard size. the depth is way too short for a normal bath (which is ok, because it's for the kids' bath which is all showers.) the size you want is a "soaking tub." ask about this. kohler fiberglass is good (i have a 10+year old shower that is fine) but i think cast iron holds heat better if you're looking to use it for baths. also, don't get the slip proof bottom if you can help it...they really hold dirt. get a rubbermaid mat if you think you need it.
good luck...not a fun project, but nice when it's done.

Feel free to e-mail me. My contact info is under member profiles or my website and phone numbers are around town.
If you are doing the remodel yourself I could possibly get you better pricing on your materials. If you are contracting to have it done I would be happy to assist you with information on various products.

We have one of these sans the garish tile and cheese**** flowers. We put it in when we bought our house and the previous own figure a 130 sq. ft. bathroom didn't need a bathtub. Ours is cast iron and the lady of the house complains that it takes forever to heat up. Apparently, being cast iron...it is cold until you put hot water in it. I think it is then supposed to retain heat. Beats me. I can count on my fingers and toes the number of times Parker or I have used it. Used to stick the kids in it a lot. Now it acts as a very nice clothes hanger for drying garments.

My wife and I have been agonizing over the tub issue for months on our re-model. We didn't care for a whirlpool either. We finally ordered an air tub last week. Air tubs use little jets of heated air around the bottom of the tub. The air keeps the water warm, and after you are done with the bath the air comes back on and dries the tub!

Most manufacturers are coming out with these- more energy efficient, way less complex, no kidney thumping from being to close to a water jet. Our model is acrylic finish on fiberglass. Not cheap though- expect to pay about a grand for non-white tub.

I'm pretty sure we're going with cast iron. I haven't heard enough great reports about acrylic to sway me. I need a tub to soak in and to last a long time. Once this bathroom is done, I never want to have to think about it again.

I just put in a refurbished 100 year old claw foot in my home and had our bathroom completley gutted . I bought the tub off ebay for about $100 and had it refinished by Great Lakes Refinishing in La Grange. He was kinda expensive but it turned out fantastic. He also will sell you a tub. I would put a pictur up but not sure how
