Don't panic, enjoy your meal.

A can of "Chunk White Albacore" has .353 parts per million mercury.

Mackeral King .73
Shark .988
Swordfish .976
Tilefish 1.45
Orange Roughy .554
Bugeye Tuna .639

Cicada .02 to .2

quote:
"Our results indicate that there are measurable and, in some instances, significant levels of mercury in the cicadas, with the majority of the concentrations ranging from 0.02 - 0.20 parts per million, but some at higher levels," Keener said. The higher levels, he said, approach those in fish that have earned government warnings.

"We recommend that humans, especially pregnant women and young children, limit the amount of cicadas they eat as a result of these preliminary findings. We do not believe that eating a small number of these insects will result in irreparable harm, but mercury exposure may harm an unborn baby or young child's developing nervous system," Keener said.

What if you were at an all-you-can-eat peel and eat cicada buffet and you really got your money's worth? Would you be in trouble then?

Well, by a rough back of the envelope calc you could eat about 48.8 pounds of cicada's to equal a good single serving of a nice grilled fish.

So yes, the Cicada just takes you further on your food dollar.

And if you do pig out on the cicada bar, it works the same:

Organic mercury that you swallow or breathe leaves your body in the feces or urine within weeks.

Some adults in the trees and have begun testing their Buzzzzzzzzzzzz in short chirps. Also spotted some dead and dying adults on our sidewalk. Hopefully the dreaded black ants will feast on them instead of our house. Cicada Mania in downtown GE was also buzzing today.

Same here. Saw several "husks" this a.m. when walking the dog. Heard a couple of tentative buzzes this p.m. while napping in the hammock.
Won't be long before I'll need to move my naps indoors to a couch! What a hardship!

We ate outside tonight knowing that it might be the last chance for a while. Same with the mini with the top down. I'm thinking I'll have to keep it closed for a bit. At least it only lasts a few weeks...

I am having the end of year party for my 5th grade girl scout troop at my house on Tuesday. I certainly hope I can at least grill out doors with out too much interference.

Heck, if lucky you won't even need to buy meat! Just use the same sticks as for marshmallows.

Any day now ...

quote:
Exactly when the cicadas will emerge is a subject of debate, although there is agreement they emerge once the soil temperature is consistently 64 to 65 degrees for several days. Biologists and insect experts predict the cicadas will emerge between Tuesday and June 1.

The best place to see — and hear — the cicadas will be forest preserves, golf courses and any land where there are older trees where the soil has been undisturbed since 1990.

Maybe they need that little bit of mercury to gauge soil temps ... Smile

Saw our first bonafide cicadas today. Several husks and smooshed ones on the sidewalk and one live and in full color one too. The kids first were a little freaked but when we stopped and looked at it, they actually thought it was CUTE! My daughter was worried that someone would step on it. Smile Such good hearts....

Mr. Klok has a good heart too. I'll be hearing the excuse for the next 6 weeks that he can't mow the lawn for fear of chopping up the cicadas. They were all over and around our big front tree after the rain yesterday.

I hope you've explained the cicada carnage that is forthcoming to your adorable children. She's going to be in for a surprise after she sees what's on the sidewalks in a couple of weeks.

I had a few in my yard on Saturday.
Yesterday I had a hundred or so. They were under my apple tree-in the grass
and on the plants near the tree- Some empty shells, some recently emerged from the shells, and some nice big ones just hanging around.
They aren't talking yet, just emerging and stretching.
I remember the last time they were here. It's hard to forget. I enjoyed their
singing more than a lot of other people. I like unique events.

Mow it yourself you sexist pig! Yes, I'm still "mentally ill" and stinging from your correction.

If I remember correctly from the last time around, fear of chopping up the cicadas can only be used during their emerging. Once they are up in the trees, Mr. Klok's mowing may have some of the female cicadas confused. The whirring of the lawn mower may sound like a male cicada's mating call.
