Why are these idiots attracted to the sidewalk?

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that since these insects are cycled to come out with temps at 65 degrees and higher that they may be attracted to the warmth emitted from the concrete.

I think someone should get their act together and have a cart on Main and Crescent selling roasted cicadas, much like roasted chestnuts. Can you hear the 'buzz' all over the Chicagoland area? People would be clamoring to get a taste and see our charming and empty downtown area.

Just a thought...

Fantastic idea, GER. It seems like most of the masses of dead cicadas I tried to avoid stepping on this morning were on the sidewalks under or near trees. Maybe they are the clumsy ones that fell off the branches?

My cicadas are starting to sing!
Was that cicada in the photo flying toward him because it was looking for a tree trunk-or something that smart?

Have yet to see any in our area.

The area under this first image is less than a square foot. There have been this many emerging every single night. To see the masses in action the operative time is 10PM to 3AM.

.
A little closer:

Last time around I was in Lombard. As I recall it, the cicada density varied considerably from block to block. Our area had quite a few of them, but essentially none compared to some places you'd walk/bike through where the ground would be completely covered with them, and the air so thick with them that they would be bouncing off of you. Seemed to be almost as localized as a single/couple old tree(s). While we could hear them very audibly, in the heavy areas it was REALLY loud.

So far the biggest sign of them is on the sidewalks as I walk to the train. And the concrete carnage seems to be concentrated under a few specific trees on just about every block. Based on my very limited viewing, norway maples and locusts seem to be especially heavily infested.

It appears a large emergence is occurring in our yard tonight. When it was dusk (around 8:30), I went out with one child to look around and saw many coming out of the ground. We were walking delicately. Then, we went back out with both kids (About 8:45 or so) and found there were even more. The slightly crunchy sound they make as they crawl is audible even with the fan blowing on the A/C and cars driving by. Amazing. I'm going back out in a few minutes to see what it looks like now.

That was me. I put them there. Remember, I have buckets of them. When I find too many for our yard, I disperse them around the village. I might be in anyone's neighborhood at any time of the night. Just call me Mr. Cicada Seed.

Let me be the first to call Cicada 2007 a bust. I have yet to see a cicada 'swarm' in my yard. I am following Clam logic, like the moon landing in '69, if I didn't see it, it didn't happen...

Unbeliever. When the overpowering whirrrr noise begins, are you going to claim you can't hear them?

Dan. They're coming your way. Just keep your eyes and ears open.

We are in newer construction and have not seen much here. Fortunately, on the walk home from Hadley there were many, many husks and bugs available. We now have quite a stash of husks - some empty, some not quite out. Has anyone taken a moment to realize how old they'll be the next time these critters crawl out? Very distressing! Roll Eyes
