Good one!

Flora, there is a scene in one of those gigantic ants movies of the 50's/60's with the tower covered like that, but with ants of course.

Phil absolutely can save us......just don't tell anyone about it.

They must have liked the rain because today there are a lot more out and the noice level is definitely increasing! A couple of trees by my church (First Congregational) on Forest and Anthony were overwhelmed with cicadas. We cruised through the area on the way home from a late breakfast. Is this true in other yards?

Definitely. Our front yard is just inundated; cicadas in the grass, the tress, the flowers, even plastered all over the front of our house. I'm definitely over the charm of all this, and into the "Ewwwww...." phase because you can't step outside without, well, stepping on them. Plus even though I know they're not damaging my flowers and plants, it's hard to enjoy the landscaping because everything's just hanging with cicadas.

Man, I was spade-edging my back lawn, and they convinced me to hang it up about 1/2 way thru. Not that it took TOO much convincing, but I just got tired of them flying into me, and getting hung up in my hair and on my clothes. The grass, hosta, and every kind of bush were full of them. Had a couple of shrub branches (arrow-wood viburnum and cornelian cherry dogwood) bent down - I think from the weight of the adults and shells. And from what I saw a couple of inches underground, there are many more on their way!

At least they're giving my lawn a nice aeration!

The Fans had an influx this morning. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I have a feeling however that our forcasters botched this one...and that the bulk of these guys aren't coming for the next couple of days.

Where the heck do you live, the moon? Our yard is crawling, flying, buzzing, and just hanging around with them.

None here either. Serious...not one. I checked the tree's, bushes, flowers, and grass. Our house was built in the 50's and we have huge old tree's. We are south of Roosevelt though, so maybe the 17 year cicadas are status hounds and stick to the right side of the tracks??

You are welcome to come visit ours to the north.

Cicadas slowly move from the older areas to the newer. South of Roosevelt is a new territory for this species. While they do have wings, they don't often move more than a half block or so each generation, so assuming there have been 4 generations of the 17-yr cicada since 1956, you will see them around the year 2194.

For a good outbreak, the ground can't have been disturbed for 100 years, mature trees must have been commonplace and dense, and the ground not ever been underwater for extended periods. Much of the south of Roosevelt area used to be a bog or swamp land.

I am in the coveted YMCA area (shadow of the water tower). I have seen a handful of shells on my fence, heard one or two, but yet to see one in my yard post-shell.

However, at the inlaws in Hinsdale, I did see trees coated with them and saw the ground move below the tree with hundreds of them moving about. This proves once again that Hinsdale business development organizations kick butt over Glen Ellyn.

Does Hinsdale have a Balloon Cicada Car? No. But G.E. does have a Balloon Cicada Car. Let Hinsdale chew on that a while. I hear they taste like almond potato peanut butter.

I repeat. If you want to see them, touch them, hear them, come over to Duane near Duane Terrace. It is unbelievable. Eek Glen Ellyn has a ton. Maybe more than a ton.
