Another big emergence at our house today. CAme out this morning to find 26 adults on three plants - all were gone tonight though their "shells" remain. On one branch of a large tree this morning, there were probably 15 or so little white bodies with black eyes hanging there waiting to "age". AGain, all were gone this evening. Wild. Driving down Lambert this evening (in Lombard) the cicadas were crazy loud in a few places. Amazing stuff.

I saw the article in the Daily Herald that said the emergence has been disappointing so far....well, they need to park themselves in my yard. Every morning I open the front door only to get a literal shower of cicadas raining down upon my head and into the house; I go outside and sweep hundreds of them off my house, off my porch, off the sidewalk, only to repeat the same scene every single day. They're breaking some of my flowers with their weight; you can't see some of our landscaping because it's covered in cicadas. They're flying into my hair, down my shirt, and if I'm stupid enough to keep my mouth open for more than a few seconds, I get a good taste of cicada.

In short, I am SO over them, and wonder why, apparently, every cicada in DuPage county is in my front yard.

Anyone else notice a lot of cicadas "stuck together" in the last couple of days? Apparently there are a lot of them doin' the nasty in my yard.

Allowing it to happen? I'm surprised you're not over here with your 8mm movie camera documenting cicada porn. Eek

The Morton Arboretum is out of control with Cicadas! It sounds like an invasion there and they are dripping off some bushes and trees.

The shop has a shirt Cicada 2007 coming soon to a tree near you....

I assume by saying 'stuck together' you are thinking along the same lines as my 4 year old upon seeing 2 sparrows 'go at it' He yelled, "Hey Dad, that bird is giving the other bird a piggy back ride." You hit the nail on the head son...

It's not the first time I've been accused of thinking like a 4-year-old. Razz

It's like a damn orgy around my big front tree right now. Birds and the bees nothin'. It should be the birds and the cicadas.

Come over to my house between 3-6 PM. You will be treated to swarms and swarms of live cicadas (and grilled asparagus spears without the benefit of using skewers) , thousands upon thousands of shells which might have value as jewelry if strung together properly...and an absolutely deafening (and, frankly...beginning to get just a tad bit irritating) buzzing that sounds as though it's coming from a 1960's sci-fi movie. If you're in a bad mood...say walking home after work...the noise is not soothing. That being said, I dearly love them (and they love me) and will be sort of sad when they depart. Mostly because I am fairly confident I won't be around next time they are here.

We have a ton of them (North of the tracks near Taylor and Duane). The sidewalks look like carnage due to all the dead cicadas and around the base of our trees is about 3 inches of discarded shells. They are so loud at our house that the other night we couldn't hear the train going by in out backyard! The puppy has eaten her body weight in cicadas-so far no ill effects.

We have several cicadas at our house and our neighborhood is quite loud. This is the first time we have experineced them and they don't bother us that much, however I think that their 17 year life cycle is a good thing. I don't think I could handle this every year.
Has anyone else noticed the odor they emit? I don't know if it is from the empty wet shells or the live cicadas, they smell like wet dog food.
I have also noticed that they started mating in our yard on Friday.

Saying they smell like wet dog food is putting it nicely. I did some yard work on Sunday and was wondering where the big steaming pile of dog poo was that I smelled. Then I realized no matter where I went in the yard I could smell it. I figure it's the zillions of rotting dead ones.

I picked up a canoe from a fellow GEBB'er on Saturday and couldn't beleive the noise. I thought something was wrong with the Jeep (nothing new there) until I realized what it was while driving down the street. Still absolutly nothing cicada-ish out by the Fox River. Frown

Hmmm...interesting you mention that. I just put this together. On Sunday, I was mowing my lawn and all the while, I kept checking my shoe as this terrible smell was following me around. It must have been the cicadas...
