Welcome to the neighborhood! We absolutely love the Glendale Animal Hospital. They are located on Glen Ellyn Main Street, just a bit south of North Avenue. Very caring and they often take the common sense approach to problems. (I switched from another vet -- won't say which one -- and was surprised at the difference.) Highly recommend giving them a try.

We have been happy with the Lombard Animal Hospital on ST Charles Rd...627-7090. Many of our friends use them as well.

Depending upon the specific need, you might want to call around and inquire as to prices. Prices vary widely for things such as shots, meds, etc. We have found one of the facilities listed above to charge nearly twice as much for certain services. You'll have to decide for yourself whether they are worth the premium. Also, you can get very different care from the different personnel associated with a single facility. We have noticed that at one of the facilities mentioned above.

Thanks everyone. I will make a few calls to check these places out. It really helps to have a much more narrow list to look into!

Just wanted to chime in with another vote for Glendale Animal Hospital. We've been going there with our dogs for 3 years, and they have a very stable staff of vets & admin help. Very friendly and practical, and we really like Katie Bosco.

I have bad news and must put down our lovely dog. Does anyone know the most painless, both for the dog and my wallet? He is 13 years old and, well, over the hill.

Sorry to hear that, Main Streeter.
I'm not sure there are a whole bunch of options. I thought I recalled when I had my old dog put down maybe 10 years ago that they simply gave him a single injection - as I understood it essentially an overdose of tranquilizer. He quickly and peacefully went to sleep and then died - never waking up.
A buddy of mine just had 2 cats put down, and he described a situation where they gave 2 shots, first a tranquilizer to put them to sleep, and then whatever euthanized them.
When I had my dog put down, I wasn't presented with any options.
You will also be charged for disposal of your dog after it is put down. I can imagine different vets might vary in their charges.
I was able to hold my dog when they put him down. And don't be surprised to find yourself crying - it is very emotional. The actual event was really no different from the dog getting a shot and then falling asleep.
I also know of someone whose vet came to their house to euthanize their dog. You will have to judge for yourself whether it is more appealing to have it happen in your home or the vet's office.

A friend of mine has had 2 dogs put to sleep at his home. Said the dogs never liked going to the vet and saw no reason to spook them in their last moments. Costs a little more...but after 13 years it might be worth it. Although I don't know what I'd do if there were small children around. Dins...was that the golden?

Nah - the golden's still kicking. Only 7+, tho getting greyer and stiffer. This was my big old yellow mutt from college. Had him put down just before I moved to GE.

Arghh. Putting a dog down is arguably one of the worst days of your life. When we put ours down we had the 2 shot thing and got to hold her. It was at the vets office, she didn't mind the vet. But I like the idea of a home visit for it, especially for pets who hate the vet. Man, I'm tearing up right now.

Been there. Done that. Too many times. Three so far; coming up on a fourth. Visit the Rainbow Bridge... but only when you're in the mood to have all your buttons pushed. --TedE
