I've been following the discussion about the C.George addition on Turner. I loved that house! Is there anything to protect older homes that haven't hit that magic 100 year number? Any examples of good renovations of homes in GE??

One rehab/addition that immediately comes to mind is a funky cottage on the W side of Forest, just N of Hill. 10 years ago it was cute as a button, but it was ridiculously tiny and in poor repair. I think the family that bought and renovated it did a great job. I'd like to hear who their contractor/architect were.
Listing the ugly ones would doubtless crash Ted's server! I'm a reasonably strong respecter of property rights. As such, I have to assume that at least a good number of home buyers are willing to buy these new homes that I consider ugly, and build these additions that I believe destroy the appearance of many homes. Personally, I'm a pretty firm adherent to the Not-so big houseprinciples. My impression, tho, is that taste, quality, and detailing cost money, and it appears a good portion of today's home buyers would rather spend their money on sheer size. Just my non-expert opinion. Like I said, someone must like these ugly homes and be buying them, or else the builders would build something different. Size and lot coverage is something that can be legislated. As I said, I'm not a big fan of the size and density of these McMansions. But a lot of people strongly oppose any governmental effort to restrict their right to build whatever monstrosity they wish on their property. Only real way to protect against that is to move somewhere with a strict homeowner's association and regulations, but of course there are problems going that route as well. |

There is a house on Hillside, north side of the street, a few homes west of Taylor....kind of a Gloucester Sage in color (Benjamin Moore HC100)...sits on an angle. I think it is owned by an architect that has his office over near Geische.

Not idea of the owner, but do you know who the builder was? |

The original house has been there forever. But Z. & O. did the renovation, IIRC. My guess is that you have walked by this house a zillion times.

Yes, that is an attractive home, tho a tad large for my preference (not to mention my back account!) That was a major rehab, wasn't it? With a big white one built new next door?
There are a lot of attractive homes on that block. Used to be even more impressive old oaks than there are now until a certain contractor left his mark... But I'm sure it was entirely beyond his control! |

The house that Clam references is beautiful.

Ironically, I believe that the work done on both houses (the beautiful older one on the angle) and the new white one was by C. George. He and his family even lived in the white one for a couple of years. I had heard that this collaboration with the architect was to be just the beginning of a great business relationship, but the projects ended with lawsuits on both sides.

That is what I had heard. My understanding is that he also built a mini-mansion for himself just to the west on the same side of the block. Lots of fine old trees succumbed to the saw. Or so I heard from a long-time resident of that block. |

Is it the one that's for sale? Green-ish craftsman style? I looked up the asking price just for giggles: $2.5 million! And the taxes? A cool $41K. Wow.

I COULDN'T FIND IT ON REALTOR.COM...WHERE'D YOU FIND IT?
That's well within my price range. Perhaps I'll pony up for it. |

Has anyone seen that the huge stone place on Lorraine, south of Hill, is now on the market? It was completed last year and the family has moved in. Want a little north of 2mm for.
Didn't know what the story was, a little suprising it is already on the market. |

The one on ksgmac.com for 2.5 mil on Hillside is not the one clam was referring to.
It was mentioned in this thread, tho. |

cupcake is much more fitting. Plus he likes to eat them. Rumor has it, this is why Honey keeps running out. This message has been edited. Is that painted white or is that primer paint?
Nonetheless, some 30 year-old is going to love that home...I would. "Often Wrong, Never in Doubt" |

I believe this house was on the Spring housewalk a few years ago. It struck me as a catalog of how many things you can put in a house. No flow. Only stuff. Lots of stuff. The front of the house on the second floor is the master bath. With a sitting area outside. Basement is bigger than most houses. Ronald M. Kas |
