We paid nothing by banning together with neighbors and breaking out chainsaws...any chance of that happening? OR is the tree in a precarious position???

It was about 150 years old and you couldn't get even two peoples arms around the trunk, not sure if three could either. What I was hoping to find out is what the going rate for tree removal was in town, ours is gone now.

You can expect to pay from several hundred to thousands of dollars to have a large tree removed and stumped (depending on many factors).

Gotcha. I was just asking 'cause we'd break out the chainsaw to come over and help! Smile

However, I know to remove a LIVE tree of the size you seem to have would be in the $2,500 area. Laying on the ground might make it less since no one has to climb up to dangerous heights. I'd bet you could find someone to do it for about $1,000. IF my guess about the overall size of it is right.

Good luck to you. We will have to get one or two trees removed too...they were badly damaged.

We got a pretty large tree removed this summer for $500. We asked the guys trimming trees for Comed...they came by the next Saturday- This was much less than we paid for smaller tree removal at our old house so we thought we were very lucky...and we figured these guys wouldn't mind that this tree was between the power lines and our house.

Is the tree on your property or the parkway? Parkway = village's dime.

Our willow had to be removed three years ago after an ice storm dropped some of it on my van Frown

The girth was 12.5 feet, was somewhat inaccessable, and came in at $800 for everything, including stump grinding. We called three places, had two estimates. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the company that handled it.

EDIT: If you have a tree stump ground out, you must call the Village first; they'll mark any underground utilities. Sounds silly, but our one experience with the Willow proved there was a live utility box buried 3 feet from the tree. That came as a surprise. A previous owner apparently planned but never began building another home on our vacant side lot.

Could home owner's insurance help with the cost or eventual replacement of the tree?

Also Winkler's Tree Service is pretty good. 708-544-1219

You might be able to get insurance to pay for it since DuPage county was declared a state disaster area and I know that our Representative Peter Roskam is trying to see if any there is anything he can do Federally. I emailed the village to get a better understanding on what being a state disaster area means and like always haven't heard anything back yet from them.

will keep you posted if I hear anything.
