Our friend's garage door opener is fried. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good company to use for replacement?

As much as I hate going into Sears and dealing with the hard sell, they were great to work with last year on the opener. They contracted out with a father and son team to install the opener and we have been happy with the performance..

My answer depends upon on which "friend" of yours you are talking about.

I've had good luck having stuff installed by many of the zillion contractors that work with Home Depot. I live in a hovel...but I know quality work.

We use Fox Valley Doors out of South Elgin. They are great!

We used J. Barrett (1-800-336-7794)when one of our springs on the door broke. That is not a safe do it yourseld project. Trainerguy replaced the garage door opener himself. I don't think that there is much to doing that job.

I'm not saying I would replace springs myself (and I'm a DIY kind of guy). But this is worth a (long) read if you want to consider it.

Middlein's link brought me back to a teenaged memory when my pop and I replaced the springs on our garage door. My father got his fingers whacked a time or two, but we made it and, afaik, it still operates today!
