Mr. Scotty and I are having a discussion. (aka a disagreement) How much would a carpenter/handman charge per hour to do carpentry work? I figure between $100 and $110 per hour. Please answer quickly because not only do I need to be right, but I need to know if I am paying too much.

That sounds rather high.

I would expect something just under $50/hour...

Just saw this now-

I would like to say $45.00 - $60.00 per hour. Depends on if just handyman or carpenter, there is a difference. Trim carpenter would be more. Painter - again - probably $45.00 and up. But that's usually a quote per room/house not hourly. Same with carpentry, it's usually one price bid. Be sure you get the signed Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights from them if it goes beyond $1,000.00, or there could be some legal reprocussions on their part.

I got the total cost for the job and guessed at the cost per hour. In fact the carpenter is in the middle of the job now. It is a lot more involved than I thought and he is doing an awesome job. The cost is well worth the amount of time and talent that I am seeing. There are also two people working on this job. Thanks for the help GEBB people!

I had no idea you were doing work on your house... I swear, you people could move and not tell me. OH WAIT! That already happened once.

Union and/or prevailing wage, expect about $80 an hour. Cost is roughly $64 per hour.

Non-union likely anywhere between $25 an hour up to whatever they think you will pay. Be careful... you often get what you pay for as there are no licensing requirements in IL for carpenters. You could get an educated carpenter, or just a guy who owns a hammer. References are everything.

Thanks for all the info. The carpenter that I hired to do the work was awesome and did a great job on a difficult job. It took two men two days to do the job that we figured would be simple. It wasn't! Mr. Scotty was also impressed and felt the cost was correct.
