Does anyone have experiance with any place that boards cats? We're kinda stuck at the last minute looking to find a place that will take two.

Thanks!

What about a pet sitter? We've used Pet Sitting on the Run 630-682-9331

I'm a little concerned about the length of time I'll be away.

You could try Lombard Veterinary Hospital on St. Charles in Lombard. It is right by the post office. They are great people and will do their best to accomodate you. Give them a sob story, they are very sympathetic. You also get a reduced rate if you have both cats kept in one cage. I don't know if they have room but it is worth a try - good luck.

I agree with Voteno-Lombard Animal Hospital is a great place to board your pets. They take great care of them.

Thanks for the kind words, Howdy. It's almost always better for pets to stay in their own home instead of a kennel.

Hi,

Lynn can you offer any advice for what to do with dogs when the owner will be gone for an extended period of time. We'll be overseas for several weeks this summer. We need someone to look after our elderly dogs. My concern is that they will be sad if left in our home for that long (with only someone coming in daily to let them out.) Do you know of a dog boarding facility that is very good? We are also hesitant to use a kennel. But at this point, we need to work something out. We are leaving in July.

Thanks!

It has always been my opinion that dogs are always happier at home, especially older dogs. Try to find a trustworthy house/dog sitter to live in your home for your extended vacation. Dog walkers charge about $14-$17 per visit. It adds up quickly and the dog is still alone a lot.

Leaving dogs for an extended period is always stressful for both pet and owners, no matter what arrangements you make for them. But the best thing for them would be for them to stay in their own home, especially if they are older. Since older dogs sleep much of the day, they may not miss you as much as you think. And having a new "friend" come in to care for them and give them exercise would probably satisfy them. I do not charge an extra fee for a second dog, so the cost of a pet sitter may be comparable to the cost of boarding two dogs somewhere.

While having someone stay in your home is a good option, it is costly, and usually pet sitters that offer this option only stay for the overnight period, then they go about their daily routines of dog walking so there won't be anyone to stay with them all day long anyway and extra walks during the day need to be done also.

Feel free to contact me and we can discuss your situation further, if you like. I'll try to help in any way I can!

Lynn:

I know you watch Rosie the yellow lab who lives across the street. I asked Mr. S. about your service and he said that you may not want to watch an older dog (13 y/o chocolate lab...who mostly sleeps all day as you mentioned). Is that the case?

We are leaving for a week+ in a few weeks and this mutt has never been in a kennel...and I won't put her in one at this point she is rather docile and it would probably kill her.

Clam, I have a very RELIABLE freind, that you met today, who is willing to stay in your house and take care of the mule. He does work the graveyard shift at a grocery store Mondays and Tuesday from 9:00 pm till 5:00 pm, but otherwise, he's off the rest of the week unless he has odd jobs. He LOVES dogs and his character is sound. We use him all the time. He will also bring the pup over to our house where we will spoil him/her rotten including walks (leisurely) to Perry's Pond. Let me know if I can assist!

Yes, I do watch Rosie! She's such a nice dog!

I do not have a problem with caring for older dogs at all. She can stay in her own home while we come and visit. I do boarding of selected dogs in my home, which are mostly older dogs or smaller dogs. So at 13 y/o she sounds like a dog that would fit in here. A visit here for your dog would be done prior to any committments, but there is usually no problem with my dogs getting along with another. Please call me and we can discuss this further. Thanks!
