Just a question based upon recent in person discussions I have had. Do you or your neighbors have outdoor cats (lets presume they are neutered and up to date on shots)? Do you care if there are a few neighborhood cats that may or may not wander into your yard on a sunny day?

cats kill birds. i like birds WAY more than cats. solution: keep cats inside. btw, we've had neighbors' cats and feral cats in the 'hood around my place for years. one guy was evicted a few years ago (let's call him crazy cat guy. long story.) and the cat problem has gone WAY done.

O.K. This subject gets under my skin. My family doesn't have a dog, because we don't want to have to clean up after it. We love dogs, we just don't want the responsibility. So, why should I have to clean up after somebody else's cat, and believe me I've had to, when I don't even get the benefit of it curling up next to me on a cold, winters night? If you want to have a pet, keep it in your house, your yard, whatever. It's not my pet, it doesn't belong at my house.

Neighbor has an indoor/outdoor model. Always finding decapitated chipmunks on my drive/yard. Better there than in the crawlspace. I am super-appreciative of its work.

I object to outdoor cats. My neighbors on one side have an outdoor cat who stalks through my yard to get to my neighors on the other side who have many bird feeders and bird baths for his daily bird buffet. If you are going to have a cat, keep it inside.

Cats are not dogs (what a profound statement) and should be allowed to roam freely...I've never heard of a cat attacking a human and the poop isn't nearly as apparent as a dog's. Cats are suppose to be on a leash...another ridiculous law...they cannot roam freely according to local laws. Just call the county if the cat bothers you...they will come and get it.

As for those nasty little chipmunk *******s...they are slowly chewing the wood of my center garage post...I need a cat!

I didn't realize that there was a law relative to outdoor cats here in town, but here it is:

B) Capture And Impounding Cats: Any cat which disturbs the peace and quiet of a neighborhood, or is found running at large or abandoned in the village, shall be deemed to be a public nuisance.

It goes on about fines, notice to owner, etc.

We have several indoor/outdoor cats in the neighborhood, they all stay mostly on their owners property expanding possibly to the nextdoor neighbors yard (there is one black and white one I have seen cross the street and he belongs to my backyard neighbor, but that's the only one). It's never bothered me one bit. They are all friendly and well cared for - clearly housepets who go outside. I don't know if they are out at night, but I don't hear catfights like I did in the city, so I imagine they are inside at night. I've never noticed any carnage (birds, etc) either. I find birds rather scary, so I wouldn't mind a few fewer birds around.

Sustained. We already know those cats won't run around in your yard on a rainy day. Let them wander. It beats letting my dogs chase squirrels. Or skunks.

Personally I don't have a problem with neighbors' cats. I had cats when I was a kid but cannot anymore due to a family member allergy. That and I don't want the furniture used as scratching posts. But I have dogs so if any of the poop in the back is a cats I don't notice. Some cat is pooping in my woodchips by the front stoop but I don't fret over it. When the GE House Walk comes to my place (hah-hah) I'll be sure to clean it up.

I've always found the hunting/stalking thing to be pretty cool, educational, and quite helpful. The mortar of our brick bungalow had numerous mouse-sized entry holes in it and come fall, having a good mousing cat was a definite plus. But I was never more proud of one of our cats than when she came bounding over the picket fence with one of those black birds in her mouth that was about as big as she was. I'm not sure why folks would get upset with a cat doing what it has evolved to do (hunt and kill small birds and animals) but not get upset at folks who supply bird seed year round, artificially bumping up our bird, bunny, and squirrel populations. Which is less natural?

Yes, I care because this is the suburbs, not some run down city neighborhood. I do see two or three, one of which I do know the name and also hear the owners wistle for! The cats I do see have collars. These cats sulk around though.! They don't hunt, they don't earn their keep, =just wander through the yards. I do hear cat fights. My cat sits and waits for them. However, I also hear racoons and rabits screaming constantly at night too. Pretty creepy on a cool summer night. An an occasional owl comes in to play too! Are you seeing a lot lately? (cats that is?)

You need a Cairn Terrier! Heck any terrier will do. (Terrorier!)

Do you know if we need a village tag for cats? I always get dog tags at, what is it, $5.00 a pop! But do we need one for cats? I do know the ordinance, Village or County -unsure which- is 3 animals per house, only 2 of one kind of species. Or is that an old law? I also strive each year to get my dog the dog tag that says "1". The closest I got was "8".

We have two. One goes out occasionally but is afraid of bees, squirrels, coyotes and most everything else that moves and wouldn't bother anyone.

That said, some cats can be bird killers but the majority are not. We welcome any cat that wanders into our yard, save one who likes to attack our window screens. There's always one bad apple.
