Our dog was charged and bitten by another dog, while he was being walked. My question do I report this? The woman who the dog bolted from came by to apologize and promised to pay for the ER vet bill. I'm not sure if anything is required by the Village

Unfortunately, "promised" means nothing. Unless you personally know the woman, I would file a report.

Back in October I was crossing the street in the big city one Saturday night on my way to an exclusive party...when I was struck by a CTA bus. Was in the crosswalk, the guy pulled up to the red light, looked left in order to turn on red, and proceeded to run right into me as he did not bother to look to the right. I went to the door after he hit me because he refused to look me in the eye...and asked him to apologize. He did. And I left with a bruised elbow and the memory of the bus number in my head. I called Parker to tell her she almost became a millionaire the easy way and she asked me if I had notified the police. I said no...as I really wasn't hurt. She informed me that this could be a problem with the guy. Perhaps he has a history of doing this and his boss should be notified. I never thought of it that way and I did call the transit police who came out unusually fast and took the info and left.

My guess is that most dogs don't just charge at other dogs and bite them to the point of injury. My dog, FWIW, is very playful with her brother...teeth flashing and clicking, growling, playful biting...yet she doesn't do that with a dog walking down the street. She is playful in an aggressive manner with him. But if she were to walk up and take a chunk out of another dog, I would be concerned.

So...unless this is a close friend, I would probably notify the authorities.

Just wondering if there was any link between this:

quote:

and this:

[The CTA] has pulled many of its 60-foot articulated buses for inspection ...
because of a structural crack in one them.

???

Much as I hate to, I agree with clam. If you do not report this to the police, then there is no official record of it having happened. Various increasing responses are triggered by repeated acts of dog aggression.

Hopefully, this is not an aggressive dog. But perhaps the owner needs to be aware of a need to control it more effectively. I do not believe there are any hugely terrible repercussions following a "first bite." But there are increasingly severe repercussions following subsequent "offenses."

Imagine the possibility that the dog IS aggressive, or the owner IS horribly irresponsible. There could be a situation where the dog bites 5 different people or dogs. But if none of those 5 formally reports it, then the sixth dog/person who gets bitten has no recourse other than if they had been the first.

Heck, in your situation you have no idea whether this was truly the first time the dog has ever attacked another dog.

You have convinced me. Will shower and paint my face and do the deed. I felt bad you the young woman, she is our rental neighbor a few doors down and is taking care of her roommates dog. She was visably upset. Later that night we walked the vet bill over and to tell her our dog as going to be ok, by that time she had called her roomies parents and brought the dog there.

thanks guys, I knew I had to do. Frown

Police took a report that will be kept on file. They will contact the owner of the dog to get info about the dog and that is about it.

Clam, stop posting those pictures.....seriously.

I keep telling IMJ junior that once Buddy kicks it, we need to have a mourning period of about 11 years before we get another dog. He will be a Freshman at Notre Dame in 11 years and we won't need a dog then, but I need that 11 year mourning period.

The perp was a lab, or lab-mix. And I think it was the dog responsible for all the barking this summer. ANd yes, DTM it was on a leash but bolted out of her hands.

IMJ, my friends lost their american eskimo after 13 years and they said that's it no more. We are done. Three months later their son called about a 2 year old neglected american eskimo at the rescue pound. SHe looks so cute in their kitchen Smile
