How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.
You could adopt through Dupage Animal Care & Control (over in Wheaton) - lots of kittens (and older cats) available. It's $100 adoption fee, which includes vet check, first shots, spay/neuter, and microchipping. They may have a deal if you adopt a bonded pair. I got my own cats from DuPage Animal Care - very nice people. I never knew they don't actually get funding through our taxes.
Also, Petsmart at Danada works with a shelter group and they have kittens/cats in the store to meet. I think that group's fee is about $125. And, a lot of vets can point you toward kittens up for adoption - often fostered in their own offices, which can include quite a bit of health care in the adoption fee. Good luck!

I still stand by my usual recommendation: A.D.O.P.T. - Naperville

Have a friend who experienced a bad exception with ADOPT Naperville. Will never go there again.
The vets I wouldn't normally recommend (GE Animal Hospital) just happened to have the kitten we adopted 3 years ago. She was very ill, but they kept accepting her back for more treatment (at no charge BTW) until her poor health cleared up. Couldn't be happier & healthier now.
Glendale Animal Hospital also has kittens for adoption. Both will strongly suggest included spay or neuter with the adoption agreement. Glendale is a more cat-friendly place.
I take my cats to GEAH, and am happy with all the vets I've met there over the last two years - and, yes, when I was in a few months ago, they had two kittens they were finding homes for. My understanding was that they'd provide medical care for any illnesses a newly adopted animal might develop, as well as the adoption fee covering initial shots, spaying, etc.

Ted, on a realistic note. My kids have two, both from Du Page County Animal Control. GE Animal Hospital gives discounts on medical services and such for these adopted little things. I look at them as gifts that keep on giving.
Thanks everybody... we knew about the "official" adoption agencies, of course... but were just hoping to help a neighbor distribute a litter for which they were hoping to find good homes. We've been on that side of the fence in the past, and know what a challenge it can be.
In any case, we're still looking. Or should I say, again looking. Shortly after I put up the original post we hit a few of the proverbial "family emergencies" which focused our attentions elsewhere. We're back on track now and once again putting out the four-legged friend welcome mat.
Best! --TedE

I just saw and met 2 kitties in Lisle a few weeks back. They should be ready for release from mom soon.(They were eating solids) Pretty well socialized. Boy and a girl. I believe one is cream with one black spot and the other cream and peach. I could ask my husband if his co-worker still has them.?

In any case, and thanks to your observation, we're thinking of pulling up our carpeting and replacing it with hardwood floors. Or tile. Or maybe Astroturf... I can probably get a good deal through West.
