So what breed of dog do you think the Obama's will settle on? Big Dog, little dog, purebreed, mutt?

I'm thinking a medium size dog from a pet rescue

I think they will adopt a dog from a shelter/rescue, too.

If they go purebreed, while I wouldn't want to be the one brushing it, I think collies are both very American and look very presidential.

It needs to be hypoallergenic, since one of the girls has allergies.

Bummer.

They should take her to an allergist and start her on shots, post-haste.

I used to be allergic, but no more.

The AKC had a poll to choose the breed. You're gonna LOVE the results!

That kind of dog would be acceptable if, and only if, it remained in its natural state:

Otherwise, forget it.

Now THAT is an attractive poodle. Never seen one without all the pruning and it is a much cuter dog au-naturale.

I think some kind of poodle mix - there are so many now and they are so darned cute. I think it will probably be a smaller dog.

You've probably haven't seen my poodle then. Cute as a button, very low maintenance.

I vote for Cairn Terrier(s) x2. The dog was in the lead in one of the polls I've seen.

Cairn Terriers would pull those girls apart limb from limb...then eat their faces.

Huh? Confused

Are you thinking of Cane Corso?

Transcript excerpt from today's press conference (credit - cnn.com):

Question: . . . Everyone wants to know, what kind of dog are you going to buy for your girls? . . .

Obama: . . .

With respect to the dog, this is a major issue. I think it's generated more interest on our Web site than just about anything.

We have -- we have two criteria that have to be reconciled. One is that Malia is allergic, so it has to be hypoallergenic. There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic.

On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me. So -- so whether we're going to be able to balance those two things I think is a pressing issue on the Obama household.
