I've got a 90 pound Bouvier who lives to chase down squirrels. She almost caught one, using a pursuit angle to the squirrels preferred tree. She watches out the window everyday for the squirrels-plotting, planning.

I never thought it would be possible for a dog to catch a squirrel, but guess what? My dog did. And guess what? The squirrel is no longer alive. I could not believe it. I always wondered what she would do if she caught one, but my question has been answered.

My dog is the nicest dog in the world and would not hurt anyone. She loves kids and other people, but just loves to chase squirrels. I felt really bad about that squirrel.

It's the chain thing...your dog isn't bad for killing a squirrel...My guess is that the same squirrel has been teasing the bejeesus out of him from a window in your home and when he got the chance, he pounced on him...that is what he is suppose to do...We don't know if that squirrel threatened your dog by insinuating harm to those your dog loved and your dog did the only thing he could to protect you...he got rid of the threat.

They do it all the time to my Mom's cat...the poor thing sits on the radiator enjoying the scenic, woodsy sun-rayed view from the comfort and warmth of it's own home and the squirrels parade back and forth all day teasing the hell out of him...no wonder he jumped through a screen and finally got a piece of that darn instigator.

By the way...he also gets all wound up when you say "squirrel"...he'll run from anywhere in the house to his spot by the window to see if the rodent is invading his space.

The same d*** squirrel keeps taunting our new pup. He is driving me mad.

On a different note - for the past three mornings, I have seen skunks roaming around. This morning, we came across one on our walk and our pup chased after it. The skunk just sauntered away, but could they be a threat to an anxious puppy? Just curious...

Heck, yes, skunks will spray dogs. Twice I had the misfortune to have to deal with our stinky schnauzer who'd tangled with one of the resident skunks. She was just emotionally devastated by the humiliation of getting sprayed. My devastation was not emotional but olfactory. Having been sprayed once, however, did not stop her from attacking the next skunk she encountered...Of course, many breeds of dogs (esp.terriers) have been bred for the explicit purpose of catching and killing rodents. I don't think you can blame the dog for doing what her instincts demand she do.

My dog has been sprayed twice and it was not fun cleaning her. Also, we saw one walking down the sidewalk when we were taking our dog for a walk. Good thing she does not attack them, she is just curious and gets too close. She only likes squirrel blood.

Have you tried the recipe online for bathing your dog after a skunk spray? My dog gets it at least 3 times a year. The recipe uses Dawn Dishwashing Detergent, Baking Soda and water. Works better than the shampoos sold at PetSmart and it is less expensive. No smell at all after you rinse off the paste. A word of caution, if your dog has super sensitive skin I wouldn't recommend this treatment but it has been a Godsend for me.

It's that time of year again. Skunks are prowling for food-and entertainment.
I've found that the best de-smeller, ( AND least toxic for pets) Is tomatoes. I always keep a large can of tomato juice and/or crushed tomatoes handy to rub into the fur before washing. It also helps the pet's mouth if any spray got in there.

I always thought the recipe was take 1/2 a glass of tomato juice, fill it up with vodka, drink it dow, and the smell doesn't seem that bad!
Repeat as necessary.

This is what I have used in the past. The skunk "spray" is actually a natural oil... and Dawn is designed to cut through and breakup/dissolve grease and oil. It helps get the oil to stop clinging to the hair.

I like Dins idea better too but most of us have to sober up sometime and deal with the skunk stench. If you do a google search you will find a recipe to make a shampoo using Dawn, Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda. It makes a paste that you apply to your wet dog and leave sit for 5 minutes, rinse the dog thoroughly and there is not even a hint of skunk odor. There is another recipe using almost identical ingredients that you can mix up in advance so that when man's best friend comes to the door at midnight smelling offensive you do not have to lock him in the garage and run to the Jewel. My dog gets skunked at least 6 times a year. It is to the point she will not even come to the back door after it happens, she hides under a bush. I have a crazy old woman who lives behind me and feeds all the wild critters. Look outside on any given night and it looks like a skunk convention. I wonder how many years the old bat has left in her......

Just an update:
My dog got sprayed by a skunk for the 3rd time and also caught another squirrel. I don't think she killed it, but definitely injured it. I need to put a cow bell on her to warn the squirrels that she is coming after them.
