There are three very small kittens living in my yard. They eat kitten chow although I think that the mother is still nursing them. They all are healthy and active. I witnessed one of them dig and bury after doing his business, so I am sure they would go straight to the litter box. One is black, one is gray and one is orange and white.

I think I could capture them if someone would be interested in giving them a good home.

The best thing to do, both for the kittens and the community, is catch them and take them to Animal Control, where they can be cared for and adopted. If they aren't domesticated while young, they'll grow into feral cats which often become diseased, get injured in fights, and reproduce like crazy. Feral cats are very dangerous to people and to other (domestic) cats.

GE Mom,
All of the shelters are full. Will you please take them in? They are VERY cute!

I busy trying to eliminate the source of the problem. The ferrel cat multiplication problem you addressed.

There is a program called CORE- Cat Overpopulation Resource Effort. Concerned citizens trap the reproducing cats, take them to be spayed/neutered and return them to the wild. The vet clips their ear so that they may be identified as sterile to prevent duplicating efforts.

Dupage County Animal Control was not familiar with this program. I am in the process of trying to find a county funded vet who does these procedures at a discount.

Once again, a good google search can help most of your problems. The link above gives over a dozens of possible shelters to contact I'm sure they're not ALL full. Also try this link for information concerning the spaying/neutering of feral cats.

I've spent a good part of my day looking at all of the links you sent. I've called many of the shelters. Unfortunately most of them are in other counties and ours are full. Did you know that most of them are run by volunteers?

I posted with hope that someone might want the kittens and to get information about a vet who is involved with the CORE program.

I suppose that you prefer looking at postings on the internet for a job opportunity rather than talking with people in the area to network.

I know how to google as well as anyone can and google searches don't solve all of lifes little problems.

Oooohhh, no need to get nasty.
You came here looking for help and since all of this is over the internet, that was the only form of help I felt was appropriate. And yes I do know that most of these are run by volunteers I once was one of them at the Anti-Cruelty shelter in Chicago.
And I laught at your personal attack at my "internet communication skills". Why don't you go walk down to the Village offices and meet face to face with one of the village officials for help with your problem. When you come looking for help from strangers over the internet you should appreciate what you're offered.

I posted this topic under the category Items for Sale. I didn't post under the category please help me use google!

The tone of your post... "Once again, if you look here your problem will be solved..." was very condescending to say the least.

Unfortunately voice inflicting can not be heard through posts and my tone was never one to be interpreted as condescending. All I was trying to do was help. Best of luck to you and the cats.

The best suggestion is to contact DuPage County Animal Control, http://www.dupageco.org, at the corner of Manchester and County Farm in Wheaton. I believe they'll take them -- it's their job. If they're adoptable they'll be adopted, hopefully. (But if they're too wild, they can't be adopted because it's not safe.) If not, yes, it's possible they'll be humanely euthanized. Wild, feral cats are very dangerous to humans and do not belong in urban areas like Glen Ellyn. I believe the Glen Ellyn Police will also respond and take them to Animal Control. That's the best shot they're going to have at getting adopted.

Dupage County euthanizes many more animals than is necessary, the paper has been full of the shake up at Animal Control. Did you try the Glen Ellyn Animal Hospital? They work with a no kill shelter and often have kittens for adoption. I would take them in but I already have six cats and a dog. I will be featured on Oprah!

I have kittens available if someone is looking for a great pet! Big Grin

I do not want to take them to a shelter unless I absolutley have to. I don't want animal control to euthanize them. I agree with the previous post. This is why all of the no kill shelters are full.

I posted on this "For Sale" board hoping that someone might want a kitten from the area. The new pet owner would know where the precious little kitten lived, what it's mother looked like, etc. I adopted my two cats from the Lombard yard they were born in. It was nice to see first hand what their history had been prior to adoption. Plus my new kittens were very thankful and loving to me as I was the person who rid them of their fleas.

I think a new thread should be started under a different category. It could be titled how to control the cat population in Glen Ellyn.

Margaret,

We've been looking for one or two female kittens for some time now. We are longtime cat lovers, and lost one of a pair last fall at the age of 13. Her sister is now 14, and lonely.

About how many weeks old are the kittens? Can it be determined yet what the genders are? We'd sure like to look at them.

My profile has been updated.

I am not sure how old the kittens are. The mother brought them to hide under our deck two weeks ago. I am guessing they are 9 weeks old. They grew about 20% in the last week.

I haven't touched them yet, so I can't say for sure what their genders are. I am pretty sure the gray one is a girl. I saw her rolling on her back playing with her siblings.

Last night I took some digital pictures. Mama Kitty and Papa Kitty were relaxing under our lawn chairs guarding the hole in the deck where the kittens hide out. It is difficult to get a good photo of the kittens, as they don't remain still for very long!

My cats are sisters. They are going to be 9 years old this summer. When they were younger they always cuddled together and cleaned each other. I can't imagine having only one cat. I can understand how sad and lonely your cat must be.

Ted,
Thank you for creating this forum. I am feeling optimistic.

Last night I took some photos of the lucky kittens who I hope will be living in luxury in a Glen Ellyn Estate.

I tried to post a photo, but the file was too large. I will reduce it and try again later.
