Does anyone know why DuPage Animal Control is not concerned about recent dog attacks by roaming coyotes? I don't recall ever hearing about coyotes in Glen Ellyn until recently and now there have been 3 small dogs attacked by coyotes in the last 4 months according to today's Glen Ellyn News.
Why exactly do coyotes have the "right to roam the area" and attack family pets?
As the owner of a small dog, I'm really bothered by the coyotes' freedom to roam. I live on Lorraine and have been told by different neighbors that they saw a coyote around here and I saw one about a month ago near Newton and Turner, so they are obviously very active.
I just saw a coyote wandering about a block from my home yesterday evening, it looked to be 70-80 pounds. It was just trotting in the middle of Eastern Ave., then darted into the bushes after I pulled up behind him. Probably explains why rabbits have not been a problem this year.

I have not personally seen any in town, but I friends have spotted them on the prairie path. I have a small dog and children. If they are attacking so many dogs I wonder how long it will take for a human attack- a 70lb one could do a lot of damage.

Get more dogs. Big dogs. I've got three over 75 pounds, I think Wiley will steer clear of a pack.
I would not leave any animal (human included) less than 50 pounds unattended. Coyotes are looking for an easy meal and more than likely not take on a full grown adult.

Yoss, you may have just discovered a new species. Some sort of Coyote/Wolf hybrid. Most coyotes are less than half that size. I'll be on the lookout for the mutant.
Yoss...if you ever see a 70-80 pound coyote in the 'hood, send it down my way and tell it to look for an old choco lab. She'd make a fabulous meal for something that frickin' huge. Will save me the eventual trip to the vet. Also, there's an interesting amuse bouche in the form of a 4-5 pound chihuahua next door to me. Barks a lot. Make sure you mention it to him.

I was surprised by the coyote's size and how bold he was to be in the middle of the road at 6:00 p.m. As I mentioned, the rabbit population in my area (Glenrise)is virtually non-existant, I credit Wiley with that.

The Coyotes were here first? Where were they hiding all these years - never heard about them until recently. I don't remember hearing anything about coyotes in the 60's, 70's and the last 13 years.
I am sure it is an evil plan by Lombardians to eat all animals and people in Glen Ellyn due to the Dog Park Fees!!!
You can't be serious, they come from the Forest Preserves and open areas that are being developed. It is not like this is a new issue. Coyotes have been eating pets forever.
Ride down Lenox at the Lake about 5.30/6.00 AM and you will see Coyotes Big and Little and thats been like that for a very long time. I don't even give them a second look. Lorraine and Hill has a fox that I see there quite often in the morning. On Lenox by our house we have Coyotes,Deer,Fox, Woodchucks,Skunks,Possum and sometimes Fish, Clams and Fans which I hope the Snellings appreciate now that they have moved into the Coach House.
Googled "coyote" and checked 4 sites, none of which list a max weight exceeding 50#.
We also have a neighborhood fox - it lives (and defecates and urinates) in the local house that is perpetually under construction. (How they expect to get $1 mill+ for a house that smells like THAT is anyone's guess. Not to mention that it has had water in its basement for the past 2 years+!)
I also find the phrasing in the OP somewhat amusing:

Dogs really are replaceable. I suppose I'd be concerned if these mega-coyotes were attacking and hauling away GE's children. But I will never lose sleep over one of nature's wonderful beasts chowing down on a lap dog. If the dog is like a child to anyone, treat them that way. Keep them under your supervision like you would a three year-old kid.
If these things really have gotten up to 70-80 pounds, I'll be asking it how it likes its Lab prepared. Sorry, Otto.
I'm may have been off on my weight estimate or this is some Uber Coyote who escaped from Argonne lab's black projects.
Here's one of Otto's buddies letting Clam have it for his callous attitude toward dogs.

Saw one yesterday in the Bog area by Lincoln. Entirely possible for it to be approximately 70 lbs if not more. Since kids go into the bog its not impossible for a Coyote to attack a child should the kid stumble into it's Den area when it's nursing or has a liter. Especially as the Coyote gets more used to people will develop less a fear of them. I've also seen them walking up and down Lorraine and Lambert so yeah they're getting pretty bold. I think they killed or forced the foxes we used to have in the bog area. Which I think has led to an increase in the rabbit population. Should a coyote get into a fight with a larger dog then you have the risk of rabies being spread. So you have to wonder about the smarts of the forest preserve people of not trying to relocate the Coyotes to someplace more wild
