Children, please! Coyotes do not weigh 70 pounds. Either it had a thick-@ss coat or you guys are shitty at estimating weight. Take your pick. Those puppies way around 30-40 pounds on average and can get up to 50 pounds.
Perhaps you saw a wolf . . . which would be a tad bit concerning.

It is summer... maybe they are just retaining water.
Look these are stil wild animals theres a reason people don't have Coyotes for a pet. I don't say that a Coyote is suddenly going to the school yard and start attacking Children what I suggest is that given the right circumstances it could happen. Secondly Coyotes are roughly the height of a medium size dog while their weight may not on average exceed fifty pounds or so . Based on their height I could see people thinking they are around 70 lbs.
I work on Pennsylvania and see coyotes trotting down the street on a regular basis. They are closer to 30 pounds then they are to 70. Yes, they were here first and have been displaced. Coyotes are not inherently agressive, trust me they are more afraid of you then you are of them. Small dogs are at risk, the coyote only sees food. If a child were to be attacked it would have to be a very small child and hopefully parents do not leave the little ones unattended. There have been many articles published lately regarding coyotes and humans learning to coexist peacefully which is what will happen as long as everyone stops freaking out and puts their guns away. Frankly, I would rather see the out of control skunk population dealt with, it is much more of a threat to my dog than the coyotes.
"I would think so, considering most references say the animals average 25 to 40 pounds, although they have been known to grow to 55 pounds in the Adirondacks. The heaviest coyote ever weighed, at least previous to this one, was a Wyoming specimen that came in at just under 75 pounds."

LOL!
I've seen a raccoon tear the snot out of a German Shepard. Got no complaints against the coyotes, who seem to limit their aggression for little yap dogs and cats that should probably be exterminated anyway.
I dare any Coyote to trespass on my property, my three Bouviers would drive him away, no problem. Heck, even Hitler couldn't kill off this breed Bouvier description Photo Courtesy of Bajoron Kennels

Thank you, taxpayer, for re-iterating my concern of the coyotes. While I'm glad I started a new thread for the "regular clique" to have fun with, I really want to know why nothing is being done.
(I've been wanting to point out the "clique" ever since they were talking about working moms vs. stay-at-home moms and the cliques that form among stay-at-home moms - as if there isn't one here! I don't understand half the stuff talked about here! But I digress....)
I don't have an invisible fence but I know most of this town does and there has to be plenty of dog owners out there who love their pets enough not to see them become coyote chow!
GENative - Who do you expect to do what. I have no problems with Coyotes (or the 70lb Coydog) and would prefer my tax money go to something more useful. If you are afraid for your dog keep it inside or keep an eye on it. Most Coyotes will smell a human and avoid any contact so all but the little one should be safe.
Yoss...is it true that owners resemble their pets????
Well, I don't have facial hair, but the chest and leg hair are close. BTW-That's not my dog, just a stock photo. My biggest (95 pounds) is about that size.
I doubt my pooches would attack unless we were threatened. They tend herd other dogs, it's pretty cool to watch how they coordinate with each other. Our youngest, a male tends to his flock-my wife's two rabbits. When their loose in the house he corrals them to where he thinks they should be.

What in the world "could be done"?
I swear to you, coyotes have not recently been introduced to the area. They've been around lonnger than we have. I'm certain the big man upstair created them for a reason. If they weren't fulfilling that task, he'd take them away.
Okay, Okay - I give up! I just read as many web-sites as possible on coyotes in DuPage and apparantly lots of towns have the same problem with the same solution - live with it!
And yes, the coyotes were here first and yes, attacking little animals is completely normal especially since we are taking away their land and their food sources. If they do attack a human, I am sure someone will intervene (Forest Preserve or other government agency). Yoss, would you step forward to go tell the coyotes to roam the Great Western Trail in the early morning. Much as I love bunnies, there are a frickin' truckload of them on the trail!
By the way, the BB is a bit clique-ish but I think everyone is pretty welcome in this clique!
