My M-I-L claims that she once saw a coyote go after a small animal after jumping over a fence. That is why I was concerned about the little pug when I walked by their house the other day. But then again, my M-I-L likes a "cocktail or two."

We just saw a mom, dad and baby coyote in our back yard, near Sunset Park. Dad was hunting. We just realized, we haven't seen any rabbits eating our plants this year....

I let my dogs out early Sat morning...I normally do this because they don't bark - they usually do their business in the fenced dog run and they're right back in. Apparently since my husband was in and out of the run hauling carpeting Friday, he didn't close the gate to the dog run. So 5:30am Sat morning, I'm trying to get my dogs in from the regular yard (invisible fencing)...I was so paranoid that the coyotes were around. I think the coyotes must've been there at some point because my dogs were going crazy sniffing. I was hoping I wouldn't have to kill a coyote w/ a frying pan. Although my dogs are bigger so maybe they could take the coyote...husky and a retriever. I'm guessing the husky'd kick his @ss...the retriever'd probably be history Frown luckily, there wasn't a problem. dang coyotes.

I heard a rumor that local businesses are going to try painting signs on the coyotes for advertising space. I think I saw one this morning running by advertising Monday night Texas Hold'em @ Firkins...but I'm not sure. Big Grin

Any dog larger than 40-50 pounds the coyote will steer clear of. Like most creatures in nature they're looking for the easy meal.

Those coyotes should get in touch with Tony Rio and bet on football with him.

LOL-Good one Clam.

We should all go to Firkin's next Monday night, once the game is over and the Bears have won, EPub can give Tony Rio the bill.

To prevent coyotes from entering urban areas, wildlife experts suggest using the following precautions:
Secure garbage can lids and dispose of meat, cheese and eggs in bags with a small amount of ammonia to deter coyotes from investigating.

Keep wild bird seed in feeders that hang above the ground. Coyotes can be drawn to the seed and to the rodents attracted by the seed.

Deter small rodents from nesting near your house by clearing away heavy brush.

Keep animals, especially cats and smaller pets, inside at night.

Store pet food inside.

Do not feed feral cats. Coyotes prey on the cats, as well as feed on the food left out for them.

Spay your female dog. Male coyotes are attracted to her scent.

For pastured animals (cows, sheep and horses) use guard animals such as llamas, donkeys and specially trained dogs, which have been proven to eliminate coyote predation.

If coyotes begin frequenting your home, let then know they're not welcome. Portable air horns can be effective. Outdoor sensor lights will also keep coyotes away from living areas.

Report threats or odd behavior. Coyotes are shy animals and should run away from humans. If you see a coyote behaving aggressively, contact local animal control or fish and game department for advice.

===============================================

OK, to recap, in order to live in GE, we must:

    [1]Have overhead sewer systems installed - Cost= $5-7k
    [2]Buy ammonia to deter coyotes - Cost= $1.79 + labor
    [3]Carry away heavy brush- Cost= $50 for haves, $0+labor for have-nots+chiropractor visit $100
    [4]Spay female dogs - Cost= $150? Maybe more...hopefully no one does a do-it-yourself spaying
    [5]Buy & install outdoor sensor lights - Cost= $50
    [6]Buy & use air horn - Cost= $50
    [7]Buy a llama - Cost= $800 + maintenance of $250/yr+ vet costs

So we're up to around $10k so far....but at least we'll have platform tennis = Priceless. Thank God.

ps/ If I'm at the 3 dog limit for GE, do you think they'll consider my llama separately for registration purposes?

I'm sure that keeping a Llama would violate some ordinance, such as the one prohibiting potbellied pigs.

Had my first official coyote sighting tonight. At the corner of Main and Phillips, across from St Mark's.

My 75 lb Shepherd mix, Princess, stared it down from across the street. The Coyote backed down and ran back into the bushes. I think Princess could have taken this one. It was probably only 35 lbs or so.

My wife was walking Oscar, the Pug, a few steps behind me. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that Oscar would be on the losing end of a coyote confrontation. At 20 lbs, Oscar can't even outrun me. And his meat is surely Prime...very well marbled. Quite a meal for Wiley.

Needless to say, my wife will not be walking Oscar at night anymore.

Don't forget, with that new construction you will undoubtedly need to support your local pipefitter by installing a home sprinkler system! Maybe you could request an exception, arguing that your home's leakiness is a sufficient fire retardant...

Well I just chased down my 2nd coyote in 4 days. Yes, the spirit of Steve Irwin is inside me. My little edible dog was barking up a storm and I look outside and there he was across the street. I grabbed my broom - wishing it was a rifle - and headed out the door (barefoot!!!) and ran after him shooing him away. He would saunter away, look back at me, I'd advance "shooing", until he left my neighbors yard (on Lorraine) and headed up Kenilworth south towards Hill.

Boy - I am so tempted to look into getting some kind of tranquilizer gun and cages and hauling them away myself.

By the way - this is 11:00 in the morning - apparently they're out at any time now.

Genative,

Next time use this handy chart to determine the age of the coyote:

The age of a coyote can be determined by looking at the wear on the incisor and canine teeth. The dotted lines show the annual wear.

Coyotes don't attack humans. They were here until the human population changed their habitat. I say let them return. The are gentle and yes, they will eat what they were meant to eat, including mice.

I have a coyote and a fox that frequent my yard. One of them lives under my shed and has been there for some time. They don't bother us and my 7 and 9 year old play in the yard freely.

I don't care for skunks or racoons but I'd take a fox or a coyote any day. In fact, I HOPE that coyotes eat skunks and small recoons.

When I moved out of the City in 1996, there was a coyote living a couple blocks for me on state property. The state knew it was there. All the animal agencies knew it was there. They considered it a good thing. Those of us who thought how great it was to have coyotes living in the city kept our mouths shut.

They can all live in my yard :-)

Coyotes?? Small annoyance. This summer we had to contend with bears ripping down bird feeders. They come out of the woods and cross the roads as big as brass. The only saving grace is that they have very poor eyesight. But, they have a great sense of smell.
