All candidates will present their qualifications and goals for their terms during the Town Meeting Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center from 8 am to 4 pm. Another Rigged election coming up.

Seventy Five years of one party rule. Enough to make the guys in Crook county to stand up and salute

I looked over the candidates for this year's openings. I am impressed with the caliber of the individuals willing to volunteer their time and effort for the betterment of our community.

I think we should consider ourselves fortunate to have experienced and enthusiastic fellow residents willing to give their time and energy for public service - an often pretty thankless job.

That, I will salute! Smile

There are a lot of ways to participate in Glen Ellyn. Information is truly power in our village. It is well worth taking the time to view the candidate videos, attend the Town Meeting and talk to the candidates and many of your neighbors, if for no other reason than to gain knowledge. And, as the first poster in this thread lists, doing so is relatively easy.

The Town Meeting is also a great educational experience for children old enough to understand elections and speeches. Although one must be 18 to vote, everyone is welcome to attend.

Please know the public's input is always valued by your village government. All points of view are considered and appreciated.

Thank you!

Yep seventy five years of single party rule. Guys picked behind closed doors. All we're missing is the cheap cigar smoke.

But we do have a declining downtown. An increase first in Sales taxes and soon property taxes. Sidewalks you can't walk on. Large pay raises given to village employees. Money spent on consultants which did nothing.

And people here complain about Cook County.

I am moving to here Clam's post from a similar thread topic:

"Let me add to this. The days of former village presidents ruling this village from their La-Z-Boys are over. Joe Wark is nary a blip on the radar these days. Vicky Hase didn't hold sway when she was in office, let alone now.

I believe the confusion and suspicion surrounding the CBP is simply based on ignorance of how it works. One not need to go through the CBP process in order to run for anything. Period. If Taxpayer O'Rielly wanted to get on the ballot for trustee or village president, he could. No ifs, ands or buts. Pete Ladisec did it and won. Gary Faules did it and lost. That said, relatively few of the absolutely huge pool of brilliant civic and business minded leaders in this town care to run. This year, the CBP was scrambling to get volunteers to run for most of the open slots this spring. There is still no candidate to run for Village Clerk. Village of Volunteers, my a$$. Well, strike that, it's the VoV if it doesn't actually take up a lot of time on a regular basis. Those who commit to serving in the various elected positions make a huge sacrifice of time and expend a ton of effort. They deserve our praise and admiration. Even the ones I don't like. Perhaps especially the ones I don't like.

To sit on the sidelines and moan, b*tch and complain is the American way. At least for the majority of us. To declare something like this useless and shammish (I know it isn't a word, but neither is Glen Ellyanite) because a lot don't know the process is so counterproductive that it's a tad bit embarrassing.

Get involved. Make a change. Do something. Plenty of room on the ballot for anyone who wants in."

From GEmom2: Here is a suggested New Year's resolution that is likely to improve most anyone's outlook and general disposition:

Complain less, contribute more.

Thank you for your many contributions to the Village, Mark! Smile

I also applaud Clam's post, and GEMom, thanks for reposting - I sometimes think that even if the top 3-4 'critiquers' on this BB, with their apparent wealth of time, knowledge, and enthusiasm, would step forward to run for an office, the Village would be a richer place. Or, they might find out governing ain't as easy as it looks. Smile

Heck, we can't even get people to run for homeowner association boards, in most cases - and how much more immediate impact on your daily life can you get?

Thanks for the heads-up GE CBP, as well! My daughter has a cheer competition this weekend (yes, ALL weekend), so I don't know if we'll be back in time to make it to the meeting.

I voted tonight and it was pretty damned exciting. I was the last voter of the night. My theory is that if you support one candidate much more than any of the others, then you only vote for him/her. In my case, it was a him. In this first round, you are allowed to vote for three . . . but if you really want to see one in particular make it to the next round, you should only vote for one. It's a numbers game and pretty obvious . . . and probably didn't need to be pointed out to those who are actually smart enough to vote in every election that you have the opportunity to do so.

Probably wasn't an oversight. For the CBP to maintain its control it wants to have as few people vote as possible.

So thats why we have our "elections" right around the Holidays. And why the only place you can vote is downtown.

How many people actually vote in these charades anyway four or five percent if that. And thats the way the CBP likes it and thats the way its going to stay

Let me guess, TP . . . . you're so busy on any given Saturday that you couldn't possibly make your way to the Civic Center to vote during this fairly well-publicized event . . . 'tis better to complain after all.

I often wonder if I sound like such a whining puss on this BB. You may be opening my eyes to my constant, incessant complaining. Do I sound as noisy and ridiculous as you do??? Big Grin

"The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Dec. 4 at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St. At 11 a.m., the candidates will give three-minute speeches to talk about their qualifications.

Early voting began Monday and will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the civic center.

Voting also will take place Saturday after the candidate speeches."

Marco wrote a good article, but this is not 100% accurate.

The voting takes place from 8-4. You can vote before the speeches if you know who you are voting for. Also, nominations and voting for the CBP offices take place after the speeches.

Why not late voting. You know, after they speak?

I'll be out of town this weekend, I can vote early and somewhat blind or not at all. Would be nice to vote Monday after hearing others take on their positions expressed Saturday.

Turnout would increase, I know I can't be the only one reluctant to vote without really having a feel for the entire candidate pool.
