Cook County and the great city of Chicago can now boast that they have the #1 sales tax rate in the entire Union, now at 10.25%, in order to close a $234 million budget gap. Way to go! Who's robbing who here!

Now Gus, it takes a lot of money to support the bloated infrastructure that is Cook County. You think it's cheap to keep incompetent relatives & croonies in the well paid patronage jobs? The Stroger legacy lives on.

Dear Yoss; further to this thread, interesting to read in todays Trib that the "collar" cook county communities like Palatine, Hoffman Estates, and Burr Ridge thinking of seceding from Cook County due to fears of sales tax revenue loss to other counties. Maybe in Chicago there is a captive audience, but people do have options elsewhere.
I was lauging to myself when they aired on TV Stroger and the Cook County Board high fiving each other for passage of this tax, like they really accomplished something. What a bunch of buffoons with absolutely no clue as to what the hell is going on. When is Illinois going to wake up. |

Palatine, Inverness, Schaumburg, Elk Grove and Hoffman Estates would look great in DuPage. That Woodfield mall revenue would come in handy.

Palatine board members want to secede from Cook County over the tax hike:

Is there a mechanism or a benefit for DuPage to start gobbling up Cook County suburbs?

Now is a great time for the EDC to take out a full page add in the Herald to let everyone in those towns know that we have lot's of retail space available in the land where taxes are lower!

Weren't collar county sales taxes going to also rise 0.25% because of this? Or did that not happen?

Already happened 58. Beleive it was the RTA tax. But DuPage and others about 3% less than Cook County. That's a lot!! Go buy a car in CC and tell me if you want to spend another grand for Blago and his buffoons.

Actually, isn't it Todd Stroger and his buffoons that caused the increase in CC? Get ready for a world of hurt Chicago and surrounding burbs. What a huge mistake. Though the Europeans still won't mind since the dollar is so weak. Even with tax, they can get some sweet deals.

DEAR AMY: STROGER HAD A PART OF IT, BUT NOT ALL OF IT. IT'S AN ACCUMULATION OF ABUSE FOR MANY, MANY, YEARS. A WEAK DOLLAR IS INFLATIONARY SO DON'T GET TOO EXCITED. STAGFLATION IS A WORD THAT SENDS SHIVERS UP ECONOMISTS SPINES AND WE ARE DAMN CLOSE TO IT. AFTER ALL, HOW DOES ONE TAME INFLATION WITHOUT PUTTING THE NATION INTO A DEEP RECESSION OR WORSE? HELLO JIMMY CARTER ERA!

Remember Ross Perot's "giant sucking sound" reference? I can't help but think of that phrase every time I think about the Cook County tax increase. I mean, it might actually be good for the collar counties but I feel for the retail establishments in CC. It seems corruption could be the undoing of a lot of things around Illinois. Makes me sick, really. Hopefully good honest people will win out.

Hi,
Gus is right, this has been going on for years. Only in the past John Stroger (Todd's Dad) got to hide most of his bloated budget through a variety of means. In the end, it all came out when Todd took over and had to actually face a budget crisis. It didn't help that he was incredibly unprepared and inept. The thing that bugs me the most is how John Stroger got to name the new Cook County hospital after himself! This should never have been allowed. |

Why? "OPEN ROAD TOLLING, BROUGHT TO YOU BY GOV. ROD BLAGOJEVICH" Isn't that just the Illinois way? "Often Wrong, Never in Doubt" |

Damn you, Fan! I've been trying to not post today and you go and do this - cite a pet peeve of mine!
Open Road tolling simply made it easier for the state to extract money from our accounts and place it into the IL tollway's. Seriously - with the never having to stop and having auto-deduct from the bank to replenish the balance when it gets low, it is not as irritating as it used to be. We hardly ever think about - Hey, why do we still have this stupid toll being collected to drive on these roads that should already be paid for??? Whenever I see the signs you reference it only makes me hate Blago more - thanks, Gov, for stupidly reminding me you're taking our money and furthermore ordering new idiotic signs touting your ability to do so, as if it's a favor - jerk! Stupid governor!! Stupid Illinois way. |

Oh come on where is your civic pride . Not only are we the most corrupt state in the union. But our largest county has the the biggest tax rate in the country. Oh yeah you know why they need this money for both Cook County and the RTA . Its to pay for their pensions and health care costs. Remember that when you look at the value of your 401K decline. Or your health care costs go up.
Oh don't expect anything to change . We are a one party state and so long as we remain that way we will be expected to foot the bill. Cook County according to the latest mid census was also the leader in population decline 50,000 since 2000. I'm sure that is just a coincidence. Illinois is also number five in out-migration. I've told my kids when they graduate from college they would be stupid to come back here. Go where the jobs are going not in dying, declining Illinois . You want to know what Illinois is going to be like in ten, twenty years go to Ohio, Michigan. |

What happens when we elect a different governor (assuming Illinois smartens up and gives Rod the boot). Will the next governor put his name on there? How much will that cost? |

I've always wondered how and why this type of promotion does not run afoul of the Illinois State Employees Ethics Act.

I believe when Daly Sr was mayor of Chicago, such a sign proclaimed so at O'hare, if my memory is correct, during his tenure. Maybe the rules have changed since then. They should have a sign at ports of entry with all the Illinois politicians in the clink due to corruption. Sort of like bringing back the "stockade" or yore! That would be a helluva greeting as you entered Illinois via highways or O'hare/Midway!
