My husband just suggested taking a trip in April. Has anyone stayed at the Biltmore? I'm assuming it is expensive to stay but have not checked it out yet. Is it worth the price? How many days to see the property? days in Asheville? Other things to know? Thanks

Going by yourself? Or with kids? Playing golf...or just going to Asheville? We stay in Asheville most every summer for a day or two...and while it is nice and offers a lot of stuff to see, I can't imagine being there longer than 2 days. Biltmore is nice...if you are into history and stuff. Not at all for kids. April may be off-peak time in NC.

The Biltmore is a great place to visit... but consider a day trip to it from an area B&B. Nearby Highlands, NC nas The 4-1/2 Street Inn and The Main Street Inn. Both are charming and mellow places in a town that's like what Glen Ellyn thinks it's like, but isn't.

(Disclaimer: I know about both places because Idid the web sites for the original owners of each, but I have no connection with the present proprietors. —Ted E.)

Go West!

A truly lovely place.

I prefer this Biltmore. The Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece in Phoenix. I have stayed there twice without a camera, but I did have 17 minutes and 23 seconds before I had to catch a flight once, speed photography!

Biltmore in less than 18 minutes

So unlikeable as a person...yet such an incredible photographer. I am so split on my feelings. I think I shall stick to disliking you as a person and thoroughly admiring your artistic abilities. Wink

When we lived in the DC area, everyone went to the Greenbrier. My boss never missed a conference there!

BE - Some of those photos make the AZ Biltmore look like it needs maintenance. The b/w images are kind of grim, but maybe you were having a bad time there.

Nowhere near the most expensive - but the most relaxing resort we've been to in AZ:

CoolWild Horse Pass

The vibe here was awesome!

Actually, I wanted to show the rough texture of the place. Everything is repeated in that pattern in the brick. The texture of the entire place is block like, except for the grounds which are beautifully maintained. All the metal is patinated, the buildings look like large cinder blocks, square, rough, and large. And also, about 2 minutes into my shooting, it went from sunny, to very dark due to an approaching storm. I had to go with what I had, so I shot everything very under exposed. You cannot have a bad time there, it is beautiful. I am a huge fan of Wright.

M, Asheville is a fantastic place and only a bonehead wouldn't find anything to do there after 2-days. Wink

Please, make sure you take at least a day to explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, which has it's starting point (or ending point, depending on how you look at it) in Asheville.

Also, plan for a sunset dinner on the terrace of the Grove Park Inn. Spectacular and great food/service. The hotel (a good place to stay, and has original Roycroft furnishings and fixtures in the original portion, but is pricey).

I have a contact for lodging that you can check out. They are a great couple that live in the Grove Park neighborhood, which is a historic, 1920's neighborhood and is completely charming. They built this wonderful cottage in their backyard, so it's very modern and is set right in their fantastic garden. The rear deck is shaded by huge Hemlocks and is very private, even though you are in a neighborhood. It is walking distance to downtown Asheville.

Also, Biltmore is great but isn't just the house. They have a nice winery that you can tour and do a tasting in and some great restaurants, so definitely make a day of it! The Biltmore neighborhood that is just outside the gates and was built by the Vanderbilt's to resemble a quaint English village, is also worth exploring (definitely visit the Episopal church that the Vanderbilt's built).

Go to Terrace Cottage to check it out further.

I know you wanted to say "heterosexual bonehead". Didn't you? You are so mean. Just because I am straight doesn't mean that I can't appreciate Asheville.

At least you will agree that The B is not a place for kids...right?

And Clam, they have an ice cream parlor at the Biltmore. Ice Cream + children = happy children.

I would say the house would be daunting for kids. BUT, it is a real working farm. Lots of fun farm things for the kiddies. What did you do, just leave the kids in the car with the window cracked? Wink

They also have white squirrels in Brevard. If you can get one of those into your little LV tote...bring it back. I'll buy you and your buddy dinner at that fancy restaurant that you like so much.

My 'buddy?'

There are albino deer in Boulder Junction. Much closer and I might be able to cram a deer-ling into my too-cool dog carrier:

Yes...perplexed. You and perplexed. Who the hell did you think I was taking...your partner? I have never had as good a time doing anything with dudes and their spouses as I have when just the dudes were present.

BTW, these babies are all over your area in MI:

BTW, Asheville visitor...do not forget to go to Brevard if you are down there. Essentially right next door.

I don't know, dinner with a toilet seat salesman? I guess I can be adventuresome. Wink

Yes, we love our black rats in Michigan. They eat a boat-load of our acorns.
