Awhile back, I asked the fine folks of this BB about area lakes and I got some great advice. Now I am hoping for some specific info about Lake Delavan. Originally, I was under the impression that it was not the cleanest of lakes but now I'm thinking maybe I was wrong. Does anyone own a house up there or perhaps has some experience you would like to share? Thanks.

Hopefully not one of these

Lake Delavan was created by building a dam and the water quality got worse and worse over the decades as it filled with ag and urban runoff. The State spent millions in the 90's to clean it up so it's supposed to be much better now.

On a side note and warning for those who think the Federal gov is completely useless- the town of Lake Delavan got cranky with Feds when they designated areas around the lake as a flood hazard (which limited development) so they thumbed their nose at the Fed and opted out of FEMA's flood insurance program shortly before the flood hit. Without participating in the flood insurance program they no longer qualified for Federally subsidized flood insurance for their residents or some of the disaster aid. Eek

Hopefully those homeowners in the video ponied up the full cost of flood insurance (unlikely) because if they didn't, well at least they have a vacant lot (or part of one anyway) to sell to try to cover the mortgage on the now non-existent homes.

They actually drained the entire lake in order to clean it up several years ago...80's or 90's...don't exactly recall when.

I don't agree that Lake Delavan is a man made lake. It was formed by glaciers that moved through the area thousands of years ago and was probably part of a much larger inland sea.

I think Biostute is thinking of Lake Delton at the Wisconsin Dells which is a man made lake. That video is a couple years old when Lake Delton overflowed it's banks and a dam or levee gave way from all the rains that they experienced that summer.

The lake is spring fed and has some of the best fishing Wisconsin has to offer. The water quality is relatively good, however the point where the spring feeds the lake if on the same side where it flows out. If you go skiing there you'll notice the water on the west side tends to be colder than the rest of the lake.

There are tons of homes up for sale now. Many with lake access, a lift or slip or a private launch.

F.Y.I. Lake Lawn has gone belly up. They will be closing this year Mad

Yes...the elephant story sounds about right. Delavan was once the summer home for Barnum and Bailey. What else would you do with a dead elephant?
