I think we are going to Saugatuck some time next month. Any recommendations for hotels (B&B's, whatever) that are good for families with young kids?

mo3-
In case you don't realize it, as a mother of 3 young children, you need to be aware that Saugatuk is a favorite of those who have chosen an alternative lifestyle. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just FYI.

I heard somewhere about that, but isn't it more so in the town of Douglas next door? Either way, no big deal. As long as there is a place for us to ride bikes, and relax by a pool or lake, it will be fine. I looked online and found several B&B's but they seem to cater to romance-seekers. (Nothing wrong with that, but my kids are coming along for this vacation.)

Has anyone stayed at the various resort hotels in Saugatuck? I'd like to hear about a few of those so I can make a reservation. And, is it better to stay IN town or just outside town in a quieter area?

You may want to avoid "Hooptie Scootie," a shop in downtown Saugatuck. I love going in there, but it has a lot of adult merchandise that I wouldn't want to have to explain to kids. It's sort of like a flamboyant Spencer Gifts. Mr. Klok just had to have the wind-up toy monkey that does perverse and unnatural things last time we went there.

Sorry Yoss, it was either you or Fish, and Fish is really mean sometimes...I guess without Fan around, you're the next best...take it as a compliment.

Look back at my previous post concerning restaurants. If you want more 'family' oriented restaurants that are good for young kids, you can try The Butler, The Mermaid Bar & Grille (great harbor-side deck), The Boathouse, Elbow Room (also great harbor-side dining). The other places I mentioned in my previous post are a little more high-end so you may want to reserve going there when you're there alone with the hubby.

Hotels/B&B's? I would definitely check out The Lakeshore Resort, which is situated on the 'quiet side' of Lakeshore Drive, directly across from Lake Michigan. They have beautiful property, a pool and access to a great beach. If you want to stay downtown Saugatuck, I'd look into Ship n' Shore Motel & Boatel. Right on the water, it has a great reputation for cleanliness and friendliness. The BeachWay Resort is a family resort, right next to the road that leads to Oval Beach. Been there for years and years and also has a good reputation. You can easily take the Chain Ferry across the river into town, but be away from the crowds.

And just a FYI, Gays and Lesbians are EVERYWHERE in this area. You will see us at the beach, at the supermarket, dining at restaurants, walking (shudder) down the street. They do not contain us in Douglas. The Dunes Resort on Blue Star Hwy. is in Douglas and is a Gay resort, so maybe this is why you heard that information.

And also another FYI, the straight people that live in town do so knowing that they are in a unique, diverse area. Many can be seen (without discord) at The Dunes with their gay friends, dancing side-by-side. Out of the 3,000-4,000 residents in Saugatuck and Douglas, I'd guess that over 50% are Gay or Lesbian. This is one major reason that the property values in the area are through the roof! :-)

So I'm number 3 on the mean list behind GE Fan and Fish, but ahead of Clam. Razz

BTW-My trip to Japan last week was fine, thanks for asking. Big Grin

Neat city, expensive, not sure I'd go back anytime soon.

Australia, my friends, it's worth the 15 hour flight from LA.

And by the way, you may not know it but this comment was extremely offensive to me.

Do you think we are out there ready to 'assault' three innocent Glen Ellyn children in the streets of Saugatuck? Are we going to 'recruit' them?

My partner and I have, over the years, done plenty of babysitting for not only my sister's three children, but also numerous straight friend's children and all are happy, normal teenagers and young adults now. In fact, maybe these kids that were exposed to our extremely everyday, normal existence will be that much better as adults and won't assume these idiotic stereotypes and the homophobic comments will become less and less.

BTW, we are also God Parents to three young children of friends and they have trusted us with the duty of caring for their childrent should they both die.

Please ask some of them to move to my neighborhood. We've got plenty of empty lots just begging for $800,000+ homes in the pretigious Glenrise Estates area. Wink

I assumed SaveTheDay meant that she might have some explaining to her kids to do - like why the two men are holding hands. You don't see that every day in GE. I doubt he/she meant anything unkind or insulting.

I certainly hope you're right FK, but for clarification's sake, I wanted to make sure I got my point across.

Just thought MO3 should be advised, since nobody else brought it up. I am well acquainted with Saugatuck, having relatives that were born and raised there. And it has been my experience that gays are not child molesters. That's pretty much the priests and scout leaders.

Sorry if you were insulted. It was not my intention.

GER, I was going to post something along the same lines and I waited as I thought you would jump back in to advise Mo3 to be aware that she might have to explain some things to her young children. I think you may have taken things the wrong way here. I always found your posts positive and informative about being Gay. I don't think anybody was trying to stereotype any Gay or Lesbian folks out there. Smile
