And by the way, you may not know it but this comment was extremely offensive to me.

Do you think we are out there ready to 'assault' three innocent Glen Ellyn children in the streets of Saugatuck? Are we going to 'recruit' them?

My partner and I have, over the years, done plenty of babysitting for not only my sister's three children, but also numerous straight friend's children and all are happy, normal teenagers and young adults now. In fact, maybe these kids that were exposed to our extremely everyday, normal existence will be that much better as adults and won't assume these idiotic stereotypes and the homophobic comments will become less and less.

BTW, we are also God Parents to three young children of friends and they have trusted us with the duty of caring for their childrent should they both die.

Good lord. Don't get so defensive.

Thanks, Arten, for the kind words. I think I did 'jump the gun' a bit, but I do feel that it is sometimes necessary (in conservative DuPage County) to educate folks on the people that we are pretty normal, everyday people.

HIC2STD, I apologize for reacting as such to your original message. I can understand being prepared for the inevitable questions that kids will always have when they see something 'different.'

We also have good friends that were born and raised in Saugatuck...who knows, maybe we know your relatives!

Continue on folks after my rant...Saugatuck/Douglas is a great place to experience, whether gay or straight.

Yes Clam, you've made us aware of that time after time. Looking forward to seeing what you'll choose as your new avatar by the way.

That is how I took the comment as well - just an FYI that I might have to explain a few things to my kids. My cousin is gay, and we are thrilled whenever he and his partner are willing to come over and watch the kids. They helped make it possible for us to go on MANY trips, just the 2 of us.

But I realize these are relatives (we consider his partner one of our family as well) which means my kids have not been exposed to as many gay folks as they would if we still lived downtown. My cousin is very conservative in his demeanor. This might not be the case with everyone else my kids might see when we are outside GE for example.

I could be wrong, but it seemed like there were more same-sex couples in our old neighborhood than in GE (go figure, it's bible-belt DuPage Cty). Smile

Hope this makes sense. I took the comments as informative and in no way were they inflammatory or demeaning of anyone IMO.

GERing, and HICTSTD, Thanks btw for all the good ideas for places to go in Saugatuck. I looked online and we have so m many places to choose from. It is pricey though!

oh PS, my husband and I might make a side trip to that Hooptie Scootie store, if we can get away. It sounds like a fun place to shop (adults only of course!). Now just have to figure out what to do with the kiddies..... ha ha....

Any suggestions for Fan's new name should he come back to the fold? (Be nice, M2C.)

Okay, I have to break my silence here and say a word about Saugatuck.

My first trip up there was when I was about 6 weeks old.My grandfather had 2 summer homes up there and I went every year until I was about 12. His 2 brothers lived up there year round. His brother, Art had a chicken farm outside of Saugatuck. We spent many summers up there picking raspberries and blackberries and eating Bing cherries. I also had cousins that were born and raised there. I'm not sure if they're still in the area as I've lost touch.

We used to rent tandem bikes and get A&W frosty mugs down by the river. We could never ride them back to the cottage as it was uphill from there to almost the end of Allegan St.
We kept a boat docked at what was then the mayor's house and would take it from the river to the lake through the channel. I would always hide under the deck because it was always so choppy.

GER-
I don't know how long you've been going there, but I remember the building they called "The Pavilion". It was half movie theater and half dance hall with restaurants below dockside. We did just about everything available in Saugatuck. I remember going swimming at the "Oval". And when the Alewives were in season.......PU! We used to go to Lake Goshorn for a day trip of picnicing and swimming. We'd climb to the top of the big sand dune and race down to the water before our feet fried.

I haven't been there in years, but did take the MR. there when we were dating. My parents rented a house in Douglas. We could get fresh baked, warm bread every morning. YUM.

Saugatuck will always have a place in my heart.

Let's take a vacation from the venom.

To get back on topic, what is your favorite Carribean island and why? Mrs. Yoss and I are already thinking about our winter vacation, generally if you book early you get better rates on airfare and hotels.

And "ceratin." Poissons is just trying to make us rethink our assumption that he's really Clam. Pretty clever if you ask me.
