I want to thank everyone who helped with ideas of things to do in Michigan. We left today at 300pm for our long awaited vacation. By midnight we were back home. Let's just say that camping would have been more luxurious than this place. It wasn't even close to what we were sold. We had dinner and discussed our options. There was no way I would spend even a night. We thought about looking for a hotel snd making a decision in the morning. We didn't see a decent looking place. So we jumped back in the car and drove home. We did stop at Blue Chip on the way. I ended up 15 cents ahead.

First call I make is to my travle agent. There has to be somewhere I can go at the last minute.

Stay out of St. Louis. Trust me.

Wait...I thought this was a "friend's" house in St. Joe????? Scratch them off your Christmas card list.

Don't havr to warn me. We were there for a wedding on the 15th. Yes, it was, I mean is, a friend's house. I wrongly assumed that because they have a beautiful home that this would be about the same. That's what I get for assuming.

Found some nice places in Mexico but worried about the weather for the next week. Might just have to do a spa day and then go to Michael's to have my face done. I think I aged several years since yesterday.

German Fest is happening this weekend in Milwaukee. Milwaukee citizens of French heritage have fled to Quebec for the week, so scratch Montreal.

Quebec City is nice...

So...how does one respond to a friend with a shitty house when questioned as to why you did a u-turn and high-tailed it back to GE?

As the home owner I can tell you that the "guest" is more than deleted from my non-existent xmas card list. As the guest you feign a deadly contagious disease.

Just curious - did you pay upfront? If so, will you ask for a refund?

No, they were nice enough to let me use the house for free. That's what makes this so hard. I'm sticking with family emergency which was partially true. A neighbor could have taken care of things for us.

As for I should be off their list. They had asked that we clean up their lots, small fix job on the pier, chop some trees branches. The pier needed to have posts replaced. The branches were on the roof of the house for 3 years now. The toilets had iron stains that looked years old. The mattresses - well I don't want to go there. There were rotted board on the deck. The boat needed to go to the marina for "a little work." This was not about being snobbish. But I would have rather paid for something and enjoyed my vacation. I do not want to lose a friendship over this. We have already spoken and her response was any time just let me know. Then she said it probably was for the best as there was a lot of work to be done.

As for Fish's comment, I'm ignoring it. I would never hurt her feelings. She was happy to know that it had not been vandalized and we did clean up the outside somewhat. We pulled old branches to their firepit for when they go up to close it. We're still friends

Mayan Riviera? I was going to offer up my house. If you haven't been to Lake Ellyn in late July, you haven't lived.

BTW, somewhere...don't know where...somebody was dissing Lake Ellyn. I must say that after the....uh...."anonymous" donor had that pipe stuck under the lake, it looks and smells really nice. Man-made lake or not, it's a nice park.

Mayan Riviera would be Mexico. I appreciate the offer because I'm sure it would include great meals. I think of Lake Ellyn more as a long weekend stay. This way I will be out of contact with anyone who may deicde to call and ask for a favor even though I am ON VACATION.

No,sorry the house isn't available. My daughter who just got married two weeks ago and moved out is back. Their new place is getting painted and her husband is putting in cans, speakers and other toys. She can't stand to be around the mess. She's a little bit of a control freak.

No problem, with her around to cater to us it would be like an all inclusive resort...
