Talked to someone who was at the candidate forum, and she said Sam Black, when asked about maximizing the levy, said he agreed with that and thought the district should get all they can. Did anyone else hear that?
Not sure any candidate is for you,and that might be good for the candidates. We covered this before. Vondrak and Nelson voted yes on the contract, and Kenwood voted no.
Ackerman, I was not able to attend the candidate forum, but I am encouraged by Kenwood's stance on the levy as evidenced by his vote on the most recent tax levy from Dec. 6, 2010. I dug into the minutes and recordings from that meeting and am amazed there was little to no press on this. Dec. 6 minutes, page 4. At that meeting the Tax Levy barely passed by a vote of 4-3. Vondrak, Howard, Ellis and Nelson voted yes, while Solak, Smith and Kenwood voted no. Kenwood inquired into using district surpluses in order to reduce the burden on the taxpayer.
I listened to the levy recording and the discussion on this is amazing to say the least. I heard Nelson give a line from Pelosi, "We have to approve this levy before we really know what we need."
Most disturbing is the conversation that occurs at the 1 hr 33 minute mark where the definition of 'maximizing the levy' has to be explained to her. It's thinking like this that boggles the mind. I wouldn't be surprised if she thinks the 2001 'phase in' was a good thing.
Ackerman, what would a reasonable salary be for, let's say, someone with a master's, 10 years experience, with, oh, 35 direct reports. And, does it make sense for the employer to pay for continuing professional education (as required in many professional areas). Just want to get a ballpark of what you would be ok with.

Sec. 24-12. Removal or dismissal of teachers in contractual continued service. If a teacher in contractual continued service is removed or dismissed as a result of a decision of the board to decrease the number of teachers employed by the board or to discontinue some particular type of teaching service, written notice shall be mailed to the teacher and also given the teacher either by certified mail, return receipt requested or personal delivery with receipt at least 60 days before the end of the school term, together with a statement of honorable dismissal and the reason therefor, and in all such cases the board shall first remove or dismiss all teachers who have not entered upon contractual continued service before removing or dismissing any teacher who has entered upon contractual continued service and who is legally qualified to hold a position currently held by a teacher who has not entered upon contractual continued service.
I find it quite amazing that the state choose not to fund pensions and has put everyone in an unbelievable position. And yet the politicians want to blame everyone else. Given the fact that state employees don't get social security what do they suggest? State underfunds pensions
My understanding is that the total number of state employees has dropped by 30% over the past 10 years. If the state cuts everyone, they would still be in the hole by 6 billion on the budget.

I DO NOT favor taxation for taxation's sake. I am in favor of an annual budget process that maximizes the use of the levy.
That to me does not mean an annual tax increase. That means to ask for what the District needs, nothing more. I have heard that referred to as "zero based budgeting" on this board.
