Information on incident outside Hadley This email is to let you know about an incident that occurred outside Hadley this morning. Police were called by neighbors who observed what turned out to be two St. Petronille students making a movie using a toy gun for a prop (St. Pets had scheduled a non-attendance day today). Four squad cars arrived on the scene; police investigated and informed the students' parents. The gun was a toy and there was no ammunition of any kind. We thought it was important for you to know immediately that there was, and is, no danger involved.
Thank God it was a St. Pet's kid. At what age do we teach the kids to not yell fire in a theatre, tell the airline ticket person you have a bomb or carry a toy gun around a school? I vote for 4th grade!

What does that mean? I was a St. Pet's kid...
And kids as young as 4 or 5 can understand that there are consequences to wrong behaviors - no need to wait until 4th grade.

CMW - I was just joking in a way. Hopefully, with this being a St. Pet's kid there won't be angry D41 parents at the next board meeting demanding something be done about this. We also don't have to worry about expelling these kids because of a zero tolerance policy.
I do agree that right and wrong can be taught very early, however, when you talk about bombs and guns, I really want to keep our kids young and innocent as long as possible. Maybe that's just not possible these days...
I can certainly understand wanting to not have to talk to young kids about guns and bombs and such, but its almost hard not to.
Our eldest son was only in kindergarten when 9/11 occurred. I remember him bringing home projects based on that - age appropriate, of course, about feelings and safety. And we've gone on plane trips with our boys since then and have had to explain to them ahead of time that there will be security and possibly "no jokes" warning signs.
It IS tough. I guess we just have to try and counter it with making them feel as safe and loved as possible.

Why are you worried about the Board? It seems to me, where children are involved, we all have the right to ask questions and be assured. As far as who kids they are, they're all of our kids, right?
Of course they are all our kids. But our administration, the board and our tax dollars don't have to worry about disciplining them.
And if it was an honest mistake, I'm sure the squad cars and commotion is enough to make a lasting impression. If it was a D41 student, it wouldn't end there.
