I think your friend list is very cool! My daughter wanted to do forensics but unfortunately sports always pulled at her first. She did participate in theater very successfully and now can stand up in front of any crowd and give a speech or presentation without any problems. I feel this is a more important skill than a 3 pointer!

kevin..i hope the wife gives you some ice when she upsides your poor head. welcome back. i did 4 years of speech AND debate...lifelong skills...and lots of fun. good thing we were able to hang onto forensics a few years ago...this was one of the first programs on the district 87 chopping block. once you lose a program like this it's gone forever... and that would be a HUGE loss!

it's been an invauluable life-shaper for my sons. kevin: my youngest would want me to make sure we mention neil flynn, the janitor on scrubs, as the '79 IL state champ in HDA. my kid and his improv buddies are ga-ga over this guy. great to hear so many posters are forensics fans. get over to GW and root on the team if you can this year. |

Neil Flynn was before my time, and on the early Bradley speech teams of the 70's. He was teammates with Tim Gamble, who has a long movie career playing character roles in films like Hoffa, The Untouchables, and perhaps most memorably for you folks with tweenie girls, Molly Ringwald's father in The Breakfast Club. Tim Gamble's son Mason played Dennis The Menace in the film with Walter Matthau.
One of my heroes and mentors is Douglas R. Springer, early Bradley debater and forensics star, currently the Director of Debate and Forensics at New Trier High School. When I was in college, I worked for Springer as an assistant coach. My wife knows that if Springer hasn't retired before my ten year-old reaches high school, we're buying the smallest condo they sell in Winnetka, so he can learn from Springer. |

Keven Spengel, you old son-of-a-bitch...how's it goin'?
Tell that t.a. superdude to start a GW Forensic team thread so I can get back to reading about that paper that gets dropped in my drive once a week. I'd tell him myself, but I like him too much and don't want to hurt his feelings. I know him to be a very sensitive man. Damn hijackers! |

Yes...that's what I mean. BTW, thanks for having your henchwoman put me through to your voicemail this morning. You're the only person I know that doesn't relish a phone call from me. Which, of course, makes me want to speak to you all that much more.

lol. two things.
1) i've given you my direct line so many times it's nearly comical. i'll send you another email so you can, this time, actually transfer the info onto something more permanent than the napkin you're currently using to wipe the donut sprinkles off your chin. 2) i ain't working today. and let me say it's gorgeous out on the back deck. thinking about strolling into town to do a quick homeless headcount. truthfully, i've not noticed too many (my son has, though). but then, as mentioned earlier, GE's CBD has not been a destination for me since about '72. . . with the exception of meeting you and clamatina at the occasional movie. |

OK, I'll admit the forensics topic was way off the subject, and I knew it. For the record, I didn't start the discussion, and believe 3 or 4 posts in a row hijacked the 1,548,393rd post beating the same dead "the school board is inept" and "we'll never trust them again" or "if this newspaper doesn't agree with the 12 of us on the BB, then it must be propaganda" or "why don't I have any friends" horse, by the same 12 horse beaters, so I piled on. Never mind, that I don't think I've ever, EVER heard civilians talking about competitive speech in public, and speech team was a great part of my school life for 8 years, and 5 years of coaching..I just couldn't resist.
I don't think beating a dead horse is a clear enough analogy. Let me try to be more specific. Coming back to read the school threads on the GEBB is more like this: 12 cowboys are standing over a dead horse, and keep swinging away, beating, beating beating. Years go by, same 12 cowboys, still beating. Many more years go by, more beating, can't even find evidence of the horse anymore, but still beating, beating, beating... That's how interesting it is to read the posts on the GEBB about District 41. Stopping by to read is like satisfying a morbid curiosity, but is in no way interesting, or intellectually challenging enough to consider engaging anyone in debate. I liked the speech team discussion, though! I'll go over to the new thread! Happy horse beating!!! |

Ron, perhaps we've been (Robin)"Hoodwinked." You have to admit being called a cowboy is better than a crotchety, crank over compost. Seems to be a step in the right direction.

What day is this paper brought to your house. I have never gotten it.
Perhaps that is what I get for having a Wheaton address. |

holy crap that was funny. very funny. kev, first of all, thanks for you constructive, helpful posts. i really appreciate your helping my son out. your post really pumped him up. i suppose that's one of the great things about message boards. to that end, i'll see you in the other thread every now and again. second, i'm new to this board and just figuring out the cliche hierarchy. some posters i know from the real world; most not. one thing's for certain, if a visitor was to make a judgement on GE from reading this site's posts only, they'd think the town was pretty screwed up. gotta admit, some stuff is kinda true, a lot is hearsay/exaggeration (what would you except from a message board?) and other stuff is just plain sarcastic funnin'. but again, the quicker you find out who the cool kids are, the better, otherwise the fins can show up in the water pretty quick. kinda fun to occasionally play hearsay police, though. i think the trick is to make sure you kowtow every now and again. not knowing your history here, but it appears you're one of the odd men out. . . too bad, you seem/have been nice to me. but, as clam will tell you (see how delicately i did that?), i love everyone. . . ;^p |

Is judging of proper grammar involved? I say this assuming you were not actually typing your post from a tournament with your kids at 12:38 AM. |

This paper seems to have an obsession with this board. First, they write an editorial regarding someone's question about their funding. (Which is all fine and good. But the rhetoric was a little strong in my opinion) Now, they publish a wonderful letter written condemning the "anonymous cowards" on this board for posting their opinions while at the same time, extolling the virtues of freedom of speech and tolerance to other's opinions. It was quite a letter. My wife threw the paper out but I would love to quote this bipolar opinion letter.
That being said, many continue to openly mock and criticize this board and its posters. If it is so vile, wrong and worthless, why is everyone reading it and talking about it? What's the old saying...."don't poke the bear." JRPotts HINT - Remember, our schools and our community need to be building bridges, not drawing lines in the sand. This message has been edited. We're just 12 cowboys beating a dead horse. Just ask Kevin Spengel. Why then, does the paper obsess about us anonymous cowards?
The question of funding a newspaper becomes germane when there is no visible ad revenue save from the bookstore which will charge for the paper that is dropped on your driveway like so much litter. I question the paper's obsession with the Bulletin Board. But then, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Am I to believe that not one other person authorized publishing their "letter to the editor". Please. And I am neither anonymous, nor a coward, Mr. Ryerson. Ronald M. Kas |

Now you make me want to read it. Can u post a few lines about what has been stated about this board? I would go get the one that was delivered to mi casa, but its buried under three bags of trash and about 10,000 maggots.

It's not that bad but the letter does call all who post on here "anonymous cowards." What's confusing about the letter though is the fact that its theme is the continued support of differing ideas and freedom of speech. It's a very strange letter.
That being said, Mr. Ryerson (who is a very talented attorney) represented/represents John Vivoda, the Mews and C. George...three lightning rods for praise/criticism in this Village...on this board, most likely the latter. |

In•ter•net |ˈintərˌnet| 1. an international computer network providing e-mail and information from computers in educational institutions, government agencies, and industry, accessible to the general public via modem links. 2. a technology combining the credibility of anonymous hearsay with the excitement of typing. eve•ry•one |ˈevrēˌwən| pronoun 1. every person. 2. extremely hyperbolic term for actual tiny number of people who read belly-acher.com message boards. Go Ryerson! Go Spengel! |
