To All: Seems we really have gotten the DH's attention on school funding. They are coming out with a series of articles regarding school funding in Illinois.

In 96-97, D41 garnered $17,630,896.

In 05-06, it took in $38,101,450, an increase of 116%. This is about $10,500/student. Numbers I've been saying all along but denied by the district and the rabid, ignorant followers of the past boards.

The state as a whole, realized an increase of 65% increase in revenues. As you can see, D41 is spending us into oblivion and for what?

So much for the tax cap, huh??!!!!

Despite this, they will come back for more $$$$. Enough is never enough.

Please turn your hymnal to the Daily Herald.

You will note that District 204 is the only DuPage District which increased its funding over 10 years by more than District 41 (116%). In 1997, District 204 had a tremendous amount of open land. Since that time, South Naperville and North Aurora exploded.

Kane County had a greater percentage of change also. Lot of farmland eaten up by housing. (Just the place for former leadership of District 41, don't you think?)

So, on Sundays, we look for the answer to mysteries. Perhaps this is where the Board can look for a reason for their credibility gap.

This is going to be a head shaking series by the Daily Herald. Perhaps it won't be too dull for Robin Hood and Kevin Spengel.

The only districts with larger percenage increases (or increases as high as D41) are in areas that are having massive population growth...what kind of increase has happened in our district in that time? Oh yeah, not much. Well, at least people can't argue with cold, hard facts. Or can they?

Amen, Ron and Amy!

For further reading, you may want to see the September, 2007 Udate on the District 41 web site. Under the question: "Is the District going to go to referendum again?" comes this "...whether we build a new school at some point, our long-range financial projections show that the District will need to go to referendum..."

P.S. The Board meets Monday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m.

I can't wait to read the rest of this. WOW! I hope the rest of Glen Ellyn is reading as well. I expect that this extreme disparity will be addressed by our board. I can't see how our needs have changed much more than Wheaton, Elmhurst, South Glen Ellyn or Oak Brook...especially by 2x or 3xs as much.

I don't know how one could conclude anything other than that we are being absolutely gouged. I can't wait to hear an "explanation."

Wow! Nothing like facts to put things in the proper perspective. It would certainly be interesting to compare enrollment growth across the school districts cited in the Daily Herald article.

PS: Wonder if this will make the front page of schoolweek?

Oh yeah, it would also be fascinating to see administration staff growth in each district as well!

Interesting to see that the only district in DuPage mentioned on the list that outpaced D41 in revenue is a K-12 district in a booming growth area. According to D204's web-site the district has 28,637 K-12 students. While I couldn't readily find a number quoted for their enrollment ten years ago, I did find a chart that had their growth. It looks like ten years ago, the enrollment in D204 was around 15,000. Meanwhile, District 41 grew by approximately 400 students since 1997.

To all: already spoke to Mel. Of course, this is no suprise at all. We've all said it before, it's just EXCELLENT for the DH to put this in Black and White for all to see.

Amy might remember when I corrected the D41 politbureau regarding the "true" amount of money spent on a per student basis at open open meeting one night. One of the current board members and a couple of her cronies just nodded their heads in dis-belief in the fact that:

A. we were spending MUCH more money on a per student basis as compared to 89.
B. The amount of money spent quoted in the D41 budget figures was FALSE. They said it was around 8,600 clams PER STUDENT.
C. Even after spending the money, D41 lagged behind 89 on test scores. And please, spare me the demographic BS. Look at the demos on the Champion website. Point being, just throwing more money at the situation may not be the intended solution.

And Amy, you are correct: the other districts showing massive budget increases are communitites where they are planting houses in farmland instead of crops or trees, all NEW bedroom communitites having to deal with population growth. I wasn't going to say anything but was waiting in the weeds for Robin Hood and maybe even poster to make an error. But now, the cat is out of the bag.

BY THE WAY, CAN ANYONE SAY "PHASE IN". THANKS MR. LYNCH, AGAIN.

BTW, NOW THE POLITICIANS ARE DILUTING THE LAWS GOVERNING THE TAX CAP. STAY TUNED. UNION POWER HAS AGAIN TRANSCENDED GRASS ROOTS POWER. WHAT A JOKE THIS STATE IS AND THE CLOWNS RESIDING IN SPRINGFIELD. THEY WILL WAIT TILL THE ROOF CAVES IN BEFORE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SITUATION EXISTING IN THIS STATE. PEOPLE JUST LAUGH AT ME WHEN I TELL THEM THE BENE AND SALARY PACKAGES FOR OUR TEACHERS. THEY STARE AT ME IN DISBELIEF AND YET, IT GOES ON.

Anyone remember the article in the Glen Ellyn Sun a few years ago about merging D41 and 89? I wrote a long letter to the editor and they decided to do an article about the idea instead. What did our illustrious former school board pres say in that article? D89 wouldn't want our debt. WELL, that debt is gone now. We're FLUSH with cash. Let's merge now!!!!

For the first time, I think the screen name actually works!

Anyone else wondering how a person can take a factual discovery and try to turn it into an emotional arguement? Oh yeah, I can think of a few other times in history that's happened....anyone else?

God forbid merging the districts Amy: this means we would lose a 200 K supt, amongst others, etc. Do you really think common sense prevails in this system??

Let me give you a hypothetical:

It's April 18, 2007 and the referendum passed. You voted for it. Then, on September 23, 2007 you read the Daily Herald to find that your District more than doubled their spending over the last 10 years.

Do you feel like a chump?

You're a stakeholder in a multibillion-dollar enterprise.

Every year, you cut a check.

Every year, you give more.

Some years, you give much more -- even if you live in the same house, work the same job, pull down the same pay.

Like it or not, you're a contributor to big business -- the big business of Illinois public schools.

This multi-part Daily Herald series will help you understand the financial side of your investment.

Other people do -- people with a stake in the dollars and cents of public schools.

Teachers. Unions.

Superintendents.

Lobbyists and lawyers.

Consultants of all sorts.

In short, people with a lot to gain from maximizing revenue for public schools.

Most of these stakeholders have a plan to tweak, update or completely overhaul the way Illinois funds its schools.

It's too bad our "anonymous coward" decided to delete his/her posts so that some of the other, more reasonable people out there could see how "the other side" can get represented here.
