I would like a school board member to clarify a few questions I have if they are able. My last post did not get any response from you guys which is interesting. Are principals part of the teacher's union? What steps are taken when parents have legitimate concerns regarding their principal and who handles these types of issues? Any information would be appreciated.

Principals are not part of the teacher's union as their contracts are negotiated with the board on an individual basis...is that what you were getting at?

Makechange,
Ackerman more or less nailed it (at least until #4 - not really the point of being a school board member, IMO). In your case with the PE, I'd say to start with the PE teachers before the principal. But given another post of your, it sounds like you already started there? And Amy nailed it, too. Principals are Administrative positions. Bob Solak |

Okay, few things, ackerman, I have gone through a few of your steps and I have worked on 1 and 2. Step 3 is not really something that can be done. You can't discuss issues such as that at a public board meeting. I believe you can request a private meeting. One point to consider is what issues you would face as a parent and family when the principal finds out as would happen quickly that you are complaining. Number 4 has been on my radar for some time. Without getting too specific, I am quite involved in the school already.
Amy, I just wondered if principals have to follow the same "rules" union teachers do, that was all with that. The PE thing is annoying and sad, but the issue is really with the principal. The leader of a building should be able to create a community and work with issues such as the PE one I discussed. As board members, do you guys ask and discuss the feedback you receive from parents? The survey we just filled out was done by many parents at my building. Will the results regarding principals be shared with the public? Will you as a board discuss the issues and has anyone ever known a case where a principal ever got replaced? I doubt it. Many of the parents feel like we are stuck. Many of the really important characteristics of a administrative leader are grossly missing here. Not sure what the interview process was like and how so much was missed here. |
