Not sure if she made the list... Funny! She is on the high honor roll |

REALLY???? How is honor roll and high honor roll determined? Honestly, I'm kind of surprised....

So, is this just a ranking for 3rd quarter grades or for cumulative GPA? |

Amy-
I was on my way to the bookstore to buy a copy of the paper when I ran into you this afternoon. I was curious to see how the lists were organized. It would certainly be easier to find your kids name if the list was just in alphabetical order. What are the cut offs for honor roll and high honor roll? and ronkas I am proud of our daughter- because she is a good person-not just because she does well in school. |

The heading is "Glenbard West Third-Quarter Honor Roll." The GPAs are not formally calculated until the end of the semester. The kids do check Powerschool to see how they are doing - they have a GPA "to date" available there. It looks like you need a 4.8 or above for high honor roll.
Good catch, GELady! Still a lot of smart/hard-working kids (most of whom are also good people) on that list. |

Clam, nice to run into you at Village Green. Hope practice was good for you. I got a copy of Schoolweek and yes, I think there is a problem with the way GW gave them the data. I will be calling tomorrow. It's a big no-no. BIG.

While it does say it is for the 3Q, when my daughter looked at it, she concurred that it lines up pretty accurately with class rank. She had some funny comments though, about a few kids near her..."Why is he so far up, he doesn't even do his homework!" or "those 2 (referring to 2 kids listed 3rd and 5th) are in constant competition with each other".
It was really nice to see so many of the top kids who are also involved with a lot of other activities. Amy may be right, though that this may not have been the best way to disseminate the information...by simply putting the lists in alphabetical order, they could have avoided any problems. |

A couple of people I know always brag about their "brilliant" kids.
The objective facts posted in Schoolweek have shown me that those kids are not so "brilliant" afterall...which is shocking. I love the way that Schoolweek has just upped the ante' on competition in this town. It's just what it needs. Next week, the Sun will start posting the net worth of the residents in Glen Ellyn....that should cause some people to either make some new "friends" or lose some "friends" around here. I'll admit I was a bit suspect on this newspaper's allegiances, but after reading the articles that hit back at the schools I am glad to see them around. The article on gym time used by the GEPD was amazing. Apparently, the D 41 Board president at the time brokered a deal in 1997 that gave the GEPD certain times available at Hadley and the other elementary schools for 40 years in exchange for $715,000 to help D41 enlarge gyms at Ben Franklin and Churchill schools. I took a picture of the exact hours and posted below, because it wasn't online and I didn't feel like typing it in.
Seems to me the Park District got an awesome deal. They paid $18k a year for over 6000 hours a year in 'inside facility usage'. That comes out to $3/hour. I didn't even count the outdoor areas. In college me and my buddies would rent the local grade school gym to play basketball on Sundays for $30 for 2 hours. The full article is here. |

The PD made many such deals with surrounding churches, YMCA and the Village. The fact that Cathy did not have the foresight, in light of the ongoing referendums, to negotiate usage rights properly, is not the fault of the PD.
While I agree the current situation seems stilted in favor of the PD, the article seems to indicate some ongoing negotiations that have netted (couldn't help it) some results. The article seems pretty balanced, and I again have to compliment the writers. Why do we need to have taxpayer funded B,C,D teams in the schools? Are there not PD programs available to the sports enthusiast who do not make the Hadley teams? Some kids make it, some kids do not. Facts of life. |

Rob: Seems stilted? Seems? C'mon. PD negotiated with the same brain surgeons who pushed through the 1997 referendum to solve capacity problems and plan for the future, only to come back for 40 million 10 years later.

Yeah, quite a sweet deal.
Nice to know our district is basically giving away facilities that were built in a move aimed at serving a greater student population than we presently have - with no portables. These guys can't get on the right end of ANY deal! Re: the class ratings, for the 2 classes at West that I know anything about, the listing in School Week does not accurately represent the class rank. |

I know my neighbors kid is about 2 or 3 in her class....she wasn't listed second or third....or even 50th.

Knowing my kids grades for this year- I think that it is pretty accurate. There are many very bright kids at West and all of them can not be in the top 3. How do parents know their kids class rank? I never got any notification.

My high honor roll ( Again, grade point is not calculated and averaged into the cumulative GPA until the end of semester, so things can, and will, change. |

I believe "official" class rankings aren't calculated or available until after Semester 1 of Junior year. They used to put the number right on that report card, but now kids have to ask their counselor directly. Clam, if your neighbor's kid is supposedly 2 or 3 in the class and wasn't listed on the 3Q list, they will definitely not be 2 or 3 anymore. The differences between the top 50 kids are just decimal points and just one crappy quarter can knock you off. Basically, the whole thing sucks....I can totally see why some districts have done away with class rankings entirely. |

Clamato's neighbors are lying about their kid's grades. By all accounts the list is accurate and Clam's neighbors will lie and allege in a year, that the kid really did get into Illinois and Northwestern but settled on NIU because she "earned" a scholarship. "Often Wrong, Never in Doubt" |
