So the lesson is - Don't tell people that your child is in the "top 10" or two or three at West. A non-committal "he/she is doing well and enjoying their activities, plus they're a really nice person," should cover all of your bases. That's the best route - just in case you're outed by the media.

There are many, many good students at West who will end up at very good schools and live happy and fulfilling lives. Smile

btw - there is no named valedictorian at graduation.

I believe "official" class rankings aren't calculated or available until after Semester 1 of Junior year. They used to put the number right on that report card, but now kids have to ask their counselor directly.

Clam, if your neighbor's kid is supposedly 2 or 3 in the class and wasn't listed on the 3Q list, they will definitely not be 2 or 3 anymore. The differences between the top 50 kids are just decimal points and just one crappy quarter can knock you off. Basically, the whole thing sucks....I can totally see why some districts have done away with class rankings entirely.

Clamato's neighbors are lying about their kid's grades. By all accounts the list is accurate and Clam's neighbors will lie and allege in a year, that the kid really did get into Illinois and Northwestern but settled on NIU because she "earned" a scholarship. Smile

My faux pas. Not only did I think she was a senior (she is not), I didn't realize it was broken up in regular and high. So...she is where I thought she would be. Seems I am the idiot. So...looks like they did put them in order of rank.

Hope they don't do that when my kid gets there. Frown

I would assume that releasing the information as to class rank was a huge mistake. It a violation of right to privacy. My guess is that a head or maybe two will roll over this.

Clam, I repeat that I know both of my kids' class ranks. The school calculates GPA/rank based only on the 2d and 4th quarters. My kids both checked theirs at the beginning of the 3d quarter, and they are listed in the paper differently - and higher in both cases.

It is possible that this might accurately reflect grade points earned for the 3d quarter, but those grades do not even factor into the GPA/class rank.

I must reiterate - It does NOT appear to be overall class rank, but a listing by third quarter performance, with alphabetized subsets of students with the same averaged grades for 3rd quarter listed. Those subsets appear to be in descending grade average order.

Kids with atypically great Q3 results are higher, and kids with not as great as usual Q3 results are lower than they would likley appear in an actual class ranking list.

I believe GEMom2 is correct. I called my daughter's counselor last week who was appauled and assured me she would find out what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again. I am certain it was a mistake. Powerschool is new to them and I'd bet they just ran the report for the paper not realizing Powerschool would spew out the results in that manner. Of course, this is all my theory but I'm willing to bet that's what happened.

Well yeah, it was just a newspaper asking.
If it had been a private citizen, they would have undoubtedly required a FOIA request! Wink

Well, it is just my speculation that my explanation is what happened. But clearly, someone dropped the ball at the school end. And yeah, I do make errors in grammar now and again....oh well. I'm not an English teacher. Smile

I will refrain from sharing with everyone the reactions of my children when I shared this news. Suffice to say, we all wish her the very best in her new position.

Ok, I don't get it. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing?

Thanks for the clues ladies, but I really did not need any clues!
