She took a paycut...makes you wonder if it was made clear that she was not a good match for d41.

My adolescents shed no tears over this. If you can't say anything nice about a person, say nothing.

Nothing.

I received this letter today. I've edited it to make it shorter for Ted's sake Smile. If you haven't subscribed to Schoolweek, I encourage you to. They've done a really nice job of balancing investigative journalism with fun, human interest pieces. And, if that weren't enough, I'll be writing a regular column for the paper! Big Grin
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Readers,

School Week will launch its second year on Aug. 27, the first day of school, with the in-depth coverage of local schools that Glen Ellyn deserves.

You can expect the same issue-oriented stories, data analysis, colorful photos and broad high school sports coverage that were the hallmarks of our editions last year.

Though we’ll continue our free newspaper delivery, we are looking to as many residents and businesses as possible to buy our paper to help offset printing and delivery costs.

The cost for first semester of 2008-09 is $16 -- $1 per paper for 16 editions between August and December. The cost is expected to be similar for second semester.

We’ve set up a convenient online pay system on our website, www.schoolweek.us. There, you can buy your subscription and/or make a separate contribution to School Week.

If you’d like to send a check, just mail it to: School Week Publishing, LLC, P.O. Box 2484. Glen Ellyn, IL 60138-2484.

As always, we appreciate all your story ideas and suggestions for improving our newspaper. We take pride in living in a community that so clearly wants quality print journalism.

Sincerely,
Diane Rado and Pete Reinwald, the editors
Edited only to remove a long line of "+++" so the post would properly word wrap.

Interesting business plan. I wonder what success other ventures have had at getting people to pay for something they are receiving for free?

And all I can say about the new columnist is, I had better get myself a bird, because I'll certainly have something to line its cage with! Big Grin

I wonder...If I pay for the subscription, can I still get it delivered to my bushes or the neighbors front yard? I would hate to lose the fun of playing find the newspaper every week. Wink

Ha, ha. You're all such comedians! Roll Eyes
Rob, I have noticed that the Schoolweek paper tends to blow more easily since it's not a very big/heavy paper. Besides, maybe if you subscribe, it will be more likely to end up where you can actually retrieve it easily. Big Grin

I've wondered why this paper was even needed. We have two other little publications which should be covering school activities. Save the trees, right B.E.

Thought some of you would find this interesting (OHMA).

quote:
Stern v. Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200, No. 2-07-0424 (August 12, 2008) DuPage County (Gilleran Johnson) Reversed and remanded. modification
Trial court erred when it granted summary judgment to school district dismissing plaintiff's complaint seeking to enjoin defendant, school district, from refusing to disclose superintendant's contract pursuant to his FOIA request. Even though contract may be contained in superintendant's personnel file, there is material question of fact with regards to whether contract is exempt; and trial court must conduct in camera investigation. Further, there is material issue of fact with regards to whether school district has waived exemption by supplying contract to members of the media requesting it.

One has to love this paper! In its first issue of the school year it created excitement about the South/West football game, tackled ACT scores, and then dove into a possible tax increase and a teacher contract negotiation in the elementary school districts. Amy's and her fellow columnist's solid advice is also present!

If nothing else, this paper adds transparency to our schools and brings issues, or should I say, Good Things, to Light!

Was glad to see this year's edition seemed to contain considerably more advertising than last year's.

Being new at the columnist thing, I was brought a special copy yesterday before they were delivered to driveways. I really am excited about this paper! Diane and Pete have done a great job of trying to dig deeper on school issues and events than any other paper seems to do. I agree that seeing more advertising is a good sign that people believe it will be read. Regardless of whether I have a column or not, it's nice to read so much news about what's happening in Glen Ellyn schools.

FYI:
Glen Ellyn School Week Switching To A Paid-Delivery System

For more than a year now, Glen Ellyn School Week has distributed thousands of copies of its newspaper for free to Glen Ellyn homes.

Beginning this week, we are making the transition to a subscription-based circulation program and discontinuing most of our free delivery.

We’ll deliver the newspaper on Wednesday to all paid subscribers in our circulation area, which includes Glen Ellyn and parts of Wheaton, Lombard, Carol Steam and Glendale Heights. Generally, you’re in our circulation area if your home is in Glen Ellyn School District 41 or Community Consolidated School District 89. We’re happy to mail the newspaper to residents outside our circulation area.

You can subscribe at schoolweek.us or by mail, at P.O. Box 2484, Glen Ellyn, IL 60138-2484.

We're also offering an electronic version of the paper, which can be purchased by using that same link.

In addition, you can buy School Week at three locations during the school year:
-- The Book Store in downtown Glen Ellyn, at 475 N. Main Street;
-- Huntington Learning Center, at 605 Roosevelt Rd (next to Jewel);
-- Inside the Glen Ellyn Metra station at 551 Crescent Blvd.

We will continue to provide a minimal number of free copies that will be randomly distributed across our circulation area. That way, residents will know we’re still around and they’ll get to see the quality of our newspaper.

The cost of our newspaper is $1 per week, or $16 for a semester-long subscription. If you have any questions, call us at 630-858-9335.
