I am sooooo excited about the new moment of silence law. I've run out and purchased two of these for the little ones.

I figured it would be a good time to transition into Islam. I'm not sure about the whole fasting thing, but you know, one step at a time, I'm sure Allah will understand. The kids do not share my excitement, but my youngest boy thinks the headwrap is kewl. Granted, it will take a few years before he develops that awesome beard.

Soon, my daughter will learn to love her burqua. Won't she look so darling in this?

I'm so thankful to our legislature for providing this wonderful opportunity to pray reflect in silence each day at school. I guess I'll have to change my tag line, no?

I've never personally known anyone that had a fatwa issued against him...you've suddenly spiked on the cool meter in my opinion.

Well, we are now losing daily instruction time to the Pledge, silence, and of course, announcements so....soon we'll have to lengthen the school day so we can fit it all in. It's wrong - plain and simple. I stand for the pledge and don't recite it - I'm as patriotic as anyone but reciting the pledge isn't patritotism and forcing kids to have a moment of silence isn't praying - nor should it be.

Of course a moment of silence isn't praying. BTW checks in the mail and I won't.....

a mandatory moment of silence each day in IL public schools. . . i'm speechless. actually, i'm incredulous. moreover, i'm embarassed to be an illinoisan.

thankfully, for my family and me, our youngest is a senior.

Claaaassss. Claaaassss. CLAAAAASSSS! SHUT UP! Thank you. (apologies to Cheech and Chong; I'm not Glenn Poshard)

I can't wait. This will certainly alleviate all school shootings.
All those sociopaths can just use that moment to "reflect" and "center".
Good God. Oh, wait a second, they can't say that - or can they?

Well, it's their minute. Can they spend that minute staring laser beams of hatred into their teacher? What about ogling the girls? The opportunities abound! Perhaps it's like detention at Holy Cross where the Dean would make you sit for 30 minutes in silence. I felt such contrition!

What makes a moment of silence?

Seems we have something that no one really knows what it is.

Made the mistake of going to the Tap House grill in the midst of family hour, oh what I would have given for 60 minutes of silence.

I'm curious, what will most of you tell your kids to do about the moment of silence?

i'm torn. one half of me (the rebel half) wants to suggest my son drop to his knees, quaking as if involved in a chautauqua tent rally -- only MUCH quieter. my good dad half will probably recommend that my son follow along and understand how incredibly difficult this must be for his teachers. no sense in making it hard on them; they didn't get to vote for this nonsense.

but my kid is a 17-year-old senior who can grasp and discuss a difficult concept with me. i wonder what the parents of 5- to 8-year-olds will say.

I have an 8 year-old. I am hoping that he can use this time to work on his ability to throw his voice and other noises. Nothing cracks 8 year-olds up like farting noises. And the good thing about those farting noises is that they do not get old at that age. I'm almost certain that Mr. Blazzek will appreciate this talent.

Or he can just stand there and keep his mouth shut...wondering just what the **** is going on.

I asked my 12-year old what he would do during the moment of silence. Response: Sharpen my pencil. I told him I didn't think that would be allowed. He is quite the multi-tasker, though.

Your right, I taught our parrot to make farting sounds (wife is po'd) but I think it's hilarious. Can't wait till our Christmas party.

Chautauqua tent rally? Like a bunch of old white-haired New Englanders in seer-sucker, listening to a lecture on culture & art?

I've always thought it might be fun to spend part of a summer at Chautauqua .

nah. more like sweaty-shirted northern ohioans, preachin' the good word to save the soul of a nation gone morally wrong. more like that kind of chautauqua tent rally. the one that is more closely associated w/ the topic of this thread.

I remember having to say the pledge in school. As my little rebellion, I'd be conspicuously silent during the "with librety and justice for all" part, because I didn't believe there WAS liberty and justice for all. Does the pledge of today still say "one nation, under God,..."? How do they rationalize that with the moment of silence for whatever? Isn't that contradictory? We'll make you say "under God" during the pledge, but feel free to pray to any God you believe in (or don't) during the silent meditation?

Schools recite the pledge everyday with "under God". I stand to be respectful but don't recite it unless I'm actually feeling patriotic (otherwise, to me, it's more disprectful to just say words that don't mean anything) and I never say "Under God". I just stop reciting for that part....I suppose it's rebellion. I resent forced patriotism - which is exactly what our fore-fathers didn't want.

The pledge of allegiance existed 62 years without the words "under God" in it. It was written in 1892 to commerate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival. Congress added the words in 1954 (think McCarthysm) under pressure from the Knights of Columbus and other special interest groups.

i petitioned congress to alter the pledge to say "one nation under a kick-a$$ constitution," but never received a reply.
