No, not in the last 6 months. I had been having issues and WOW provided an updated cable modem and that seemed to solve my problem.

Nope. Do you have TIVO? Sometimes we have signal problems and when we re-boot the TIVO, it's fixed....just a thought.

Yes - I called the other night and the recorded message said that if I was calling about my e-mail being down, the were aware of it and working on it. It was back up in the morning. The message actually said to go ahead and hang up as there was no need to stay on the line.
Also, our router keeps dropping our wireless connection. One of the kids noticed that it occurred when the portable phone rang. It also seems to clip the PS3 wireless connection.
Does anyone know if those two events could be related?

Thanks, I will call them and see if I can get an updated modem. It sounds as if this is the problem. Usually I can fix computer problems but this one is annoying me!

GEmom2, I am not an expert on these things, but I did a lot of research before I moved my office to the house. Try changing your phones to the new DECT 6.0 frequency. Many portable phones interfere with wireless technology. The DECT 6.0 frequency range (1.9 GHz) is the new standard for a couple reasons. 1. It does not interfere with most other radio frequencies. 2. It allows manufactures to “standardize” to one frequency saving you and them money (in theory). The downside is that the 6.0 has less range. We got our DECT 6.0 (for both the home and office) at Fry’s. Fry’s has easily 3 times as many portable phone styles as any of their competitors. Now if someone who really knows what they are talking about would like to correct me Scotty, this could your problem too.

Thanks Perplexed and GEMom2 the phones and connection seems to be related. Strange that the 5.8 phones worked until last week? Any ideas?

My microwave is between the plugged in modem and the wireless that is hooked up to my main computer. Every time someone uses the microwave, my computer slows down and won't download video. Same thing when my refrigerator runs. Crazy? I know.

I called WOW and explained what was and was not happening. They are sending a service person next week. Will let you know what I find out, but in the meantime I will continue to unplug the modem and restart. Yuck!

scotty - I have found WideOpenWest's service people to be very good. We recently had a second HDTV line run and they charged us nothing for it. I had this guy climbing around in the attic with a flashlight, and finding where the return vent ran to drill through and feed a line down and over to where I wanted. They techs are very helpful and even will give you their cell phone number to call if you have any problems later on. The guy who installed the internet was equally helpful. Ask questions when you've got them there. I'll monitor our situation, but I think the kids are right - it's caused when the old portable phone is in the vicinity of the computer that we have problems. Good luck!

little...way: Your Wifi and your microwave are both operating in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. You might be able to eliminate the Wifi vs. microwave problem by logging into your Wifi router and changing the channel number. If you're currently on a channel like 9 or 11, try changing it to a channel at the other end like 1 or 6. If you do a google on terms like "wifi" and "microwave oven", there are probably sites with more detailed advice.
I'd also avoid using cordless phones operating at 2.4 GHz. Besides the DECT 6.0 phones that operarate at 1.9 GHz, the digital cordless phones that work at 5.8 GHz are an option. We bought a Panasonic 5.8 GHz setup at Fry's a few years ago and it has worked well for us.

Some 5.8 GHz cordless phones systems transmit on 5.8 GHz from the base to the phone and on 2.4 GHz from the phone to the base. This could cause problems, although I don't know why it would only start showing up now.

Paul I agree and I am almost positive that it is the modem, but we will see.

Thanks, Paul! I'll try it! I love this board! If you need a tuxedo or an opinion on bathtubs or even help with competing home appliances and electronics --- it's all here! BTW, we've got the DECT 6.0 phones, so we should be o.k. there.

I just got a call and did not lose the cable connection. I am still figuring it is a bad modem.

If you've had the modem for a while, it could be that it is worn out.

Amy, by signal problems do you mean inability to receive the HD pac stations and/or some of the digital signals? I occasionally have such problems and am trying to track down the cause. thanks

Yeah, like water eroding rocks over millions of years, those electrons eventually wear down the electrical connections...

The problem has been fixed. The tech from WOW replaced the modem and fixed a loose wire in the tech control panel in the basement. Life is good!
