My husband's laptop mysteriously is having an ip issue. I can connect to the network, but get a message saying "can't acquire IP address." All the other computers on the wireless linksys network are fine. I have tried everything I can find on google. Resetting, renewing, pinging, ponging....Anybody got any ideas? Or know someone I can take it to for repair? Any help would be appreciated.

What kind of computer? Are you trying to connect wirelessly or via a NIC? Some Dells have an issue with some Dell software interfering with proper operation of the NIC.

Is the laptop receiving an IP via DHCP? If so, you might need to allocate more internal (192.168.1.*) addresses to be doled out via DHCP. Go into the Linksys admin (192.168.1.1) and check to make sure you have enough internal IPs allocated.

You might also want to check to make sure MAC address filtering is on -- and that your laptop's MAC address is in the table. I've had the frustrating experience of forgetting to enter a new device's MAC address into the filter. (Although this doesn't sound like the case.)

Finally, if you go the Start menu. In the "RUN" box type "CMD".

When the command window comes up, type IPCONFIG. This will show your current IP address. If you see a weird address, you might try resetting the router to renew all the DHCP address.

You can also type "PING 192.168.1.1" to make sure you're able to talk to the router.

The computer is a Compaq. It is running xp.

Unfortunatly, I do not know what DHCP means or how to allocate more internal addresses. I have already reset and renewed the ip address but I am not even sure if that was done correctly. I guess I need to see a professional. Thank you all for your suggestions.
