I've had cingular, now at&t for years and for the past year or so my cell phone service has been very spotty. Has anyone else had a hard time getting a good connection in Glen Ellyn with at&t?
No, but we travel a lot and we find that in many areas of the country AT&T doesn't work. However, I do find that it will accept a text or email message and save it until I am in a place where AT&T is supported. We have had Cingular and AT&T for years, but will change soon. I am thinking Verizon?
The at&t signal in town is scattershot, at best. There is a roughly 3 ft. circle on the second floor of my house where I get a signal. Whenever I get a call, I have to run upstairs before it drops.

The old AT&T Wireless got a license for that site 10 years ago or so and put in some equipment, but didn't finish. About two years ago, we had a controversy about T-Mobile putting in a cell site there. I believe that was approved.
My AT&T coverage on the west side of Glen Ellyn has improved slightly over the last year. One thing that could be going on is that AT&T has been in the process of changing how they use their two frequencies and I've heard that they have started to make this change in the Chicago area. Previously, they have typically had their 2G coverage at 850 MHz and their 3G coverage at 1900 MHz. Now that 3G is taking off, they are doing a swap because the 850 MHz signal covers a wider range. If they have done that here in Glen Ellyn and if you have a phone that only has 2G, then your coverage could have gotten worse. The improvement that I have noticed is that I now get 3G coverage inside my house instead of only outside.
I have had very few issues with Verizon ever. The only time was in Argentina (I have the CDMA/GSM phone) and they gave me a big credit for my problems. There customer service is as good as their coverage.

We live in the SARC area, have AT&T, and have no problem with making or receiving calls. I have a Blackberry and Mr. Scotty has a Nokia and both of us use the cell phone in all areas of the house. We live in a 50's brick ranch that has solid plaster walls. However, this street has what is probably the highest elevation in GE.
