Has any one ever tried a non-WOW supplied digital cable box. I am looking to add a box for the kids TV and would like to purchase one instead of renting for $7.50/month. Wow says you have to use thier box for support reasons. Has anyone ever tried a different box?

Also, I have been a DSL user in GE for 10 years but the bundled cable package that WOW offers seems like a good value. My DSL has been very reliable and no problems. Any issues with WOW cable internet?

Thanks.

I have been happy with my WOW cable modem. We go through stretches here and there where we seem to be rebooting the modem a lot, but it hasn't happened in awhile, and I think that might happen with a lot of services. We went with WOW for the better value and have been pleased.

Thanks for the feedback. Are you using the WOW cable modem ($2.50/month) or did you buy a modem? I am not cheap - but you can buy a modem for $36 that WOW says will work. Little over a year and you have paid it off.

We purchased a Linksys cable modem and it works just fine, along with our linksys router.

You can easily acquire a compatible box via the Internet. Most suppliers ask you to identify the make/model of the cable co-supplied box in order to sell you a compatible box.

However, your agreement with WoW may prevent you from connecting your own equipment. Further, since a box acquired off of the 'net is likely capable of displaying premium channels, connecting it to the system could (I'm not a lawyer) be illegal unless you have some way of proving it isn't being used to steal content.

No, when we purchased our cable modem we called WOW to let them know we'd done so. They sent somebody out to pick up theirs, and removed the $2.50 per month charge from our bill. Now, a converter box might be a different matter. But they were fine with us purchasing the cable modem.
