Does anyone know how to activate the wireless on a DSL mobel - 2wire? I have a new Ipod and I was testing it out and according to 2 things-I dont' see the 'wireless' connection in the menu/control pannel/connections part, and 2-according to some sorces-if the number starts with 169, which I do see on my ipod, it means that I have not been assigned an addess and that if it starts with 169, it is bad. Now what? Sounds to me like it's pretty secure. Constantly getting invalid argument. So if anyone knows how to correct my router box, that would be cool. I've tried reset. I'm wondering if I'm missing a piece.

Usually when you go to the internet with the Ipod it asks you for a network to connect to - Your 2 wire should show up (probably the strongest signal if you get more than one). Ipod asks for a network password which is the long # on the bottom of your 2 wire. You may be able to do it manually through the IPOD menu also.
If the Ipod can't find the wireless signal either the box isn't working or the IPOD.
I am not an expert here, so this might be completely unhelpful, but who knows?
I have a 2wire DSL router and didn't have to do anything special to get the wifi to work. Are all of your lights solid (non-blinking) green? Are you using the "wired" capabilities of the router and this is just the first time you've tried to use the "wireless" part of the router? I can't imagine that you don't have an IP address if the router is working OK for wired devices. It's all the same network. It's very possible that your network might be called 2WIRE169. The wireless network is called 2WIRExxx with xxx being the last three digits of the serial number. Someone's is bound to be 2WIRE169.
Do you have any other devices you could test to see if it's the iPod or the router? My Blackberry will pick up our home wireless if I enable the wireless option as well as both our laptops.
Last, but not least, you have the WEP key, right? It's the 10 digit number under the serial number on the router. You need that to actually access the network.

The wireless does not show up in 'network' on my computer. My ipod starts to pick it up, but it is a 169.254.235 connection, yada yada yada, which is useless in the Ipod world. I guess it's a security thing that the router and AT & T put on it. I want to be able to adapt it but it won't show up on my computer., 2wire087 The light in the front is solid, but there is no connection to adjust if I were to go look for the properties.

If it's like my 2 wire the top light is green meaning "on" the second down should be green meaning "network found" and the third should be green meanings its connected to the internet. The software att provided (cd) must be installed also. Last but not least 2wire has a website that is a bit technical but you can modify your router there with your wep key (on bottom of router). But you should't need to go there.
If its not showing up on your computer (2 wire router) i would reinstall the software.
The first thing you should try is unplugging the power to the 2-wire, waiting 20-30 seconds and plugging it back in. Then look for the 2-wire network in your available networks. It should be named 2wirexxx (where xxx is the last 3 digits of the 2-wire serial number). The password to the 2-wire is located in parentheses on the bottom of the router. it is a 10-digit number. The "169.254" ip address is just an indication that you are not connected to the router and are not receiving an ip address.
did that days ago -nothing. My available networks keep saying 'your LAN or Highspeed networks". Nothing about wireless nor do I see the little icons for wireless.
I'll try to contact or get a program with this box. I believe it was plug and play, but I did just get a new hard drive and that may have been something that was wiped out?? Don't know. I have to contact either AT& T or 2wire to see what the problem. This is VERY COMMON problem with this box and another one, I forget, but if you google this problem, it's common, but to fix, is not that easy -so far. 169.254 is something I'm trying to fix and update. so I'm guess AT & T or 2wire.com. I can even see my system on the 2wire website/system settings, and there is a wireless page that is just getting blurry to me now. Getting complicated. I don't know what setting or switches to fix...I even tried to input a static address and numbers on my ipod but they didn't stay. and it still would not make the final connection. It see my ipod - hence the light in the front, but my ipod picks it up if I agree and then it proceeds to pick up the 169.254...... number, which is not good enough.

If you just replaced the hard drive that's probably it- it's not plug and play- you need to re-install the software/registration from the cd that came with the router, or you can probably download it from AT&T.
BTW I've never had a problem with 2wire. I don't remember how many years ago it was that I got it but never an outage, signal, or equipment problem.
Yes-the router is not the problem, it's just problably not completely unsecured and such. No disk came with this. I believe I need to start with 2wire then AT & T. It's what I and ITTHOM said before, I'm not connected to the router. It's a common problem and I thought I'd find a simple, 'oh you need to click this box someplace' solution.
In fact it's probably a brand new router of about a year or so. I'm still very pleased with the thing. Thanks guys anyways!

Okay-got the darn thing figured out. Had to have a chat session with AT & T. They kept insisting on putting the WEP key as password-but some reason I thought I changed this and kept putting in my new password. Hence -kept getting teh 169.xxx.xxx address. The WEP key gave is a 192.xxx.xxx address and viola-it worked. Thanks everyone for your help. ITTHOM and Biostitute had the correct Idea. I just didn't go with it at first. Sorry guys!
