Hmmm... interesting. I've been listening to streaming music whilst surfing the web and simultaniously downloading some podcasts... and didn't notice a problem. But out of curiousity I ran a couple of speed tests and found...
Clearly, you need to invest in a dedicated T1 line direct to the Thompson Center in downtown Chicago... and hope a truck never hits the wrong utility pole.

So I called WOW this morning when it still was acting up. They had me run a speed test and did a few pings and everything worked fine... Strange how now it works! Scotty said that the old modems are white and that they should be replaced, so maybe the problem is the modem and I will have intermitent problems till I fix it.
Anyway, this is the link to the test site WOW had me use:
My Download speed was 4490 kbps and my upload speed was 500 kbps. That seemed about right. Although I didn't know my upload speed is so much slower (they said that's normal)
The upload speeds (of almost all ISPs) are capped because they don't want to encourage you to host videos, music and other bandwidth-heavy services from your home computer. Legit hosting services cost more.

There are also technical reasons causing internet access to have asymmetric data rates. Wikipedia has a decent summary of why DSL is asymmetric.
WOW has the worst service EVER!!! They blamed my problems on the VOIP, so I shut it down. Then they blamed the problem on my firewall, so I shut it down. Now they say it's my computer. Dell spent over 2 hours with me and said they can't find anything.
WOW will not give me a new modem or take the blame. I hate WOW. I will call tomorrow and tell them I'm leaving if I don't get one. I would do it today, but I still have to eat breakfast, lunch, shower, call back everyone who called me today.
Thank you WOW for killing a good 6 hours of my work day.
From across the street ... while I've been in West Texas most of the week, I haven't heard any complaints about internet access from the Mrs or kids. But, like the electricity, we may be on different lines. Also, I've always had very good customer service from WOW on the rare times I've needed it.
Actually, it works better than it ever has. When WOW said it was a VOIP problem (even though my online poker was not working either) and refused to help, I did some research.
I found a posting online that suggested I unplug EVERYTHING that is connected to the computer, modem, ETC. and leave it unplugged for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes plug everything back in and then push the reset button on the modem, VOIP and router. After everything cycles back through, unplug everything again and wait ½ hour. This worked like a charm!
WARNING!!!! If you do this, be smarter than Perplexed. Make sure you mark all the wires. It took me forever to figure it all out.
Did anyone else with WOW internet and cable lose service last night? My daughter was really mad as she was watching and TIVOing "Project Runway". Luckily, it's back to normal this morning. Anyone else?

Not here, Amy. But I did call yesterday to ask about the increased amount of spam that was getting through to my in box. A few filter adjustments were made and so far, so good. Though the service rep did tell me that for $1.99 a month I could add their special spam blocker.
We use WOW cable/phone/internet and are only a few blocks from you (near Oak and Highland). No problems here. But remember... those old rabbit ears will continue to work until February...
