So, being 44, this site came to my attention a few weeks back when we were told that one of the kids on the block...perhaps he/she is in 8th grade or so...had a rather racy page on this site. I can't imagine that it's the same kid as I see him/her heading off for church every Sunday...but what do I know? It is rather funny, but for the wrong reasons.
Anyway, I understand that we didn't have the same technology 25-40 years ago, but if we did, would we be so stupid to do stuff like this. We give them the opportunity to be as smart or smarter as we were as kids, yet it seems they are getting more and more stupid as the years go by. So, kids out there, unless you want 43,000,000 people to know what you did over the weekend...don't post it (along with photographic proof) on the Internet. |

And Clam I don't think they care if 43000 people know.

I guess I saw some humour in the fact that someone would share so publicly the secret that they had seventeen hundred band songs on their iPod. Not to mention a love for the music of the Spice Girls. The writer truly is the epitome of a band nerd. If those were the actions of a character in a movie you'd say it was over-the-top.
1700, that's like six-straight-24-hour-days of marching bands non-stop. |

My space along with a number of other websites are a HUGE problem for many reasons. Our school has it blocked so that students cannot access it during school hours (we can't really control what parents let their kids do).
Cyber bullying, and the potential for sexual predators are of greatest concern from this site. Kids give so much information about themselves, it's very dangerous...not that we haven't revealed a few things about ourselves on this BB. Computer Rules I highly recommend: 1. Don't let your kids log on to the computer without you logging them in. 2. Check the History to see where they have been. 3. Forbid Chat rooms. 4. Keep the computer in a main room where you can easily monitor their activity. 5. Sternly tell them to NEVER write down their screen name or e-mail addresses for freinds 6. Sternly tell your kid(s) not to tell ANYONE their password. Not even their best friends. Bad things can happen when friends are influenced by the wrong people to divulge it. True stories - bad ones. 7. I don't recommend the cell phones that can take photos either...many cases of locker room snapshots getting put on the internet! I know it sounds crazy but they'll be glad if they get to adulthood unscathed. It's scary the things that kids are doing to each other via the internet. When I visited Hadley for the third Tuesday program, sure enough there was a piece of paper on the ground in my daughter's classroom. Being conscientious and dorky, I picked it up and was going to put it in the recycling. But I stopped to check it in case it was a student's assignment - nope, a girl's screen name and e-mail address. I don't want kids to be totally paranoid but a little paranoid might be a good thing! "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. The really important things are not houses and lands, stocks and bonds, automobiles and real state, but friendships, trust, confidence, empathy, mercy, love and faith. " -Bertrand Russell V. Delong |

Amy, we have been telling kids that for 15+ years, but as always they think they are invincible and could not possible pertain to them. I am sure you do not mean me, is the usual response. Sad, but true.

our kid is only 2.85 and he already logs in to our fam computer and navigates to the sesame street website...my husband has locked his screen name down to only being able to go to noggin and sesame street...i know...cause i tried to check the WEATHER under his sign in and it said access forbidden....more people should do this...sit down with your kids and figure out the ones you will allow...and that way if they want to add any extras later they have to come to you to get them added....it's pretty awesome.

I would make a few recommendations to this.
1. e-mail: Get your kids a web based email like hotmail or google mail. That way you can monitor the e-mail without being to intrusive. 2. chat rooms are'nt all bad. AOL has some that are monitored so let your kids use these. 3. Upgrade to XP. Create an administrator account that only you know the password to . Give your kids normal privileges. This prevents unauthorized software from being installed on your or your kids PC's. Actually I recommend that for anyone who surfs the web. If you need to install software log in as administrator install the software and then log off ASAP. That is unless you like reformating your hard drive and re-installing everything again. |

The botom line is parents have to monitor everything that is done on the computer. I know I will get bashed for this but I read every email, check every website, and have a program that allows me to see every IM. I have known about myspace for quite awhile. It is a great way to check out your kids friends.
On a lighter note I had a blast informing my clueless brother that his 13 and 11 year old daughters had myspace accounts and some of the content was quite interesting. He is always bragging about his two perfect angels. Angels my butt..... |

Voteno...what program do you use to see your kids' IMs? IMing is my kids' major source of evening communication with their friends. My only strategy now is to suddenly spring up behind them...but man, are they fast. They can close a page in about a millionth of a second, which, as I tell them, looks extremely guilty.

i use this software at my work to watch the employees. keeps track of IMs, websites and programs that they use. its a very good tool. runs in the background so no one knows that its even there, unless you tell them. GoldenEye Spy Tool |

You can archive a lot of IM programs. A lot of my clients IM me orders instead of telephoning. My guess is...while the angels are sleeping...you can enable the archiving feature and read their IMs at your leisure. |

Clam, by the way, "Your Space" is great! But tell us something new, we already knew you were into small boats.

So all of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's have now morphed into what the CIA. Kind of Ironic huh.
Honestly I think you have to let kids make some mistakes. You can't monitor everything they do. I don't know some of this strikes me as going to far. |

I'm getting uncomfortable with this.

Clam, check the faces of people around you...if you notice they have goatees and they didn't before, then perhaps you are in a parallel universe...
