Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could buy a replacement hard drive for the kids' PS3? It fried a few months ago, and I am finally getting around to fixing it.

The original is a Hitachi Travelstar5K160 - 40GB. Ideally, I would like someone to open the little metal frame that holds the bad drive, too. The screws are very difficult to get going and I don't want to strip them.

Thanks!

Try ebay....probably lots of them.

If you want to try locally...call Tom at Game Stop up on Roos. Rd. 858-5962. Tell him I sent you.

Mom,

From the looks of several websites it looks fairly easy, assuming you are comfortable with simple computer upgrades.

How to upgrade your ps3 drive.

You need to get a drive that meets the following specs:

"The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook hard disk. Both 5400-RPM and 7200-RPM drives should work fine. The physical size of the hard disk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray."

So, stay away from the 3.5 inch drive footprint.

Looks like $50 for a 250 Gb on pricewatch.

It's the spending, Stupid!

I know of 15 stores where the "Jim sent me" will work very well. I also know two locations that will throw you out!

Do you have anything to offer on fixing our "Yellow Light of Death" - which appears to be the popular online diagnosis of our PS3's problem?

I didn't think so!!

FYI - Farther down that strip mall you can get a pizza for just $5 when you tell them, "Jim sent me." I would definitely drop the wink, though. Smile

That is the problem. I actually despise the thing. It was an artfully negotiated purchase. "Look, Mom and Dad, you can use the Blu-ray player to watch movies and we'll always get off of the video games as soon as you ask us." This line was accompanied by sincere and winsome facial expressions.

We do miss our Blu-ray, but not the Rock Band, Call of Duty or NCAA Football that was played in the family room.

Nika, try the "Jim sent me" thingy at Subway. They'll give you a foot long for $5 and some change!
