We are currently shopping for a new flat planel HDTV in the size range of 40 to 50 inches. We need help deciding between LCD and Plasma. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world. |

It really depends on what you want to spend and where you will place it. If you want to mount it on the wall, you'll probably need to go with a plasma.
It's tough to judge picture, not all sets are calibrated the same especially at places like Best Buy or Circuit City. I've always liked Sony, but Samsung is coming out with some good stuff and it's usually priced $200-$300 less than Sony. I would go to Tweeter or ABT to compare. ABT will usually give you a good price, but it's a bit of a drive. I would also check Consumer Reports regarding reliability. There are many articles on the internet that discuss the pro's and con's of plasma and LCD. "Deck the halls..." |

I have been looking at the Sony Bravia which at this time will not hang on the wall.

If you aren't hanging it on a wall look at the Sony Wega 50" proection LCD. Only about a foot deep, weighs all of about 50 pounds, and the picture is the brightest and sharpest we saw. We have had ours for about a year and love it. The LCD is the way to go if you have kids wanting to play video games, plus it has pc inputs so you can surf the GEBB in 50" widescreen glory. They can be had at Sams Club with a stand for $1800.
We did a lot of research on these (including my stint as a Circuit City employee last summer) before we setteled on this one. |

Why won't a Sony Bravia hang on a wall? |

A few tidbits on the subject:
The only thing for certain is that flat panel will be cheaper and better tomorrow. We have been looking for awhile now and will purchase sometime from Feb through Apr of 07, this should get us next generation, stable technology and low price all in one. |

It could hang on the wall. I didn't state it correctly: we don't choose to hang it on the wall. Thanks for all the info. It is really helping as my expertise is certainly not in tv's. Amazing how one can really understand computers and not know much about tv, but this is why we have b-boards and knowledgeable friends. I have really learned so much the past couple of days. I have never been a real tv watcher until recently when an injury forced me to me to be more stationary. Now that I am hooked om tv, I want a better view! This message has been edited. Is it just me or have others noticed the different quality of HD broadcasts? For example, the Fox broadcast of the Bears was OK, but when I watched the NBC broadcast of the Denver/NE game the picture quality seemed much better. It could be a number of things, Fox using older equipment plus the fact they have to cover the entire NFC (budget constraints) vs. NBC doing one game of the week.

Yoss, I am with you on the HD picture thing. It is weird, they should be all broadcasting about the same, but there is a difference. We just bought a 50 inch Plasma, Panasonic. The picture is just phenominal and the set up of the tv on the wall was so easy. After reading the review on the internet and in Consumer Reports, I couldn't pass up the Panasonic.
Go with the Plasma as it is a killer picture. "Nothing changes if nothing changes." - Anonymous |

I've got a Sony 57" rear projection HDTV that I bought in 2002 and I'm itching to upgrade. I'm leaning toward a Sony 60" LCD Bravia, but I think I'm a year away according to the CFO(wife). Heck, she's already got me year end bonus spent on new carpet.

Would those be hand knotted silk or 6X6 squares with sticky on the back? |

Closer to the 6 X 6 squares. From Menards.

I am kind of kicking myself for not going with the 58", but I am still happy I went with the Plasma...... "Nothing changes if nothing changes." - Anonymous |

I have noticed the same thing. Last year, Fox's NFL broadcast quality was far above the rest. The picture was incredible. I have noticed a severe downgrade in the quality this year. I am thinking that maybe it is because I'm not watching the prime game of the week. I have also noticed the sound quality is quite variable with the back channels being quite inconsistent. |

We are still looking. We live north of Roosevelt and south of Hill, why? I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world. |

Yoss, that is sick, but I am still ok with my TL. It doesn't make me want to trade it in..........YET........ "Nothing changes if nothing changes." - Anonymous |

I'm waiting for the 2009 revision in which I'm certain they will incorporate SH-AWD and over 300+hp.

Well, quite frankly, I was going to steal your new television. I'm glad you didn't narrow it down too closely...or give out your address by mistake like some people around here have. |
