Well, I tell you, having been in a service industry and having to kiss every ******* claimants *** for 5 years, I realized that I deserve as much service or more as anyone else.......I have no problem causing trouble when the service I recieve on the phone, at the car dealer, at a restaurant and with Directtv....Even if I don't get anything, I like to get people in trouble if they screw me....

Microcenter, a national chain with a location in Downers Grove is offering a 32" LCD HDTV @ 369.99, 37" @ 499.99 and 42" @ 799.99 on Friday, 24 Nov.

I'm going with a larger namebrand hi-end Plasma, but it looks like I'll be buying really soon if this kind of price war catches on. The pricewar is expected by the market to be especially brutal when it finally breaks out owing to substantial over-capacity.

Are you sure those are High Definition sets or ENHANCED definition? Those prices say EDTV to me, but with it being an off brand it's possible. I'm looking to pull the trigger on a wall mountable Plasma or LCD this Spring.

From some of the articles I've read, this Christmas will be the last time you see a sharp decline in plasma/lcd tvs. The price curve will begin to flatten out after this holiday buying season...

Good article.

I'm going to wait until after the Superbowl to see what kind of bargains will be out there. My wife wants "the kind you hang on the wall", but I'm struggling with the additional cost and installation expense. I really like the Sony 60" LCD and have seen it going for as low as $2,000.

50 Inch Panasonic Plasma on the wall is the only way to go.....I would have been disappointed if I put that TV on a stand. The wall installation is so easy and makes the room look so much better.

I really like the plasma, but to tell you the truth, I would have like the LCD too, but I got a great deal on the plasma and I had to go for it.....

I currently have a Sony 57" CRT HDTV. The picture is great, but I'm looking to upgrade. The viewing distance is currently 12', so I'd like to stay with 55" or greater. I did see a 58" Plasma at Abt this weekend, it looked pretty good.

Interesting article. It will be nice when they come down in price as once you have one flat panel, you start looking for another one.Flat Panels

Right now, I see rear projection as the best "bang for the buck". Abt has a Sony 70" LCD that looked great, they were playing "Gladiator" in Blue Ray. The new Sony LCD projection sets are all 1080p, which should keep the set from becoming obsolete for at least 4 years.

Seems the next quantum leap in resolution will be organic LCD, but I read that is still 5 years away for TV's.

Yoss, you can't be serious, Rear Projection? What is Epub putting in your girltini's? My brother has a 62 inch Samsung DLP in his family room and it looks like it needs its own post office. The thing is huge......Step up to the plate and buy the flat screen....Don't be scared....It is just money, ask Clam and Fan.......

You been talking to my wife? Wink

Yes, they are large and imposing. I'll wait till late winter/early spring to get down to business. Perhaps by then, there will be a large LCD flat screen over 55" that won't require a new mortgage. Sony seems to edging that direction.

Some snippets on the ongoing price war:

quote:
Hefty Discounting
Of Flat-Panel TVs
Pinches Retailers
Crowded Field of Rivals
Slash Prices to Win Sales;
A Jolt From Circuit City

Rapid-fire discounting of flat-panel TVs is feeding a consumer buying frenzy this Christmas season, but sapping the profits of electronics retailers, with Circuit City Stores Inc. among those hit hardest.

Despite the heavy demand, stores nationwide, including relative newcomers to the flat-panel market such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., remain well-stocked with the big-screen TVs, even though prices have dropped an average 40% in the past year.

The price war has been a boon for consumers who, in some cases, were able to snap up the sets over the Thanksgiving weekend at below retailers' cost.

But growing competition and plummeting prices are taking a heavy toll on many retailers. The consumer-electronics market has turned into a free-for-all as the nation's largest electronics retailer, Best Buy Co., has fended off attacks by giant discounter Wal-Mart, which is looking to electronics to help recharge its growth. Flat-panel TVs this season also have cropped up for sale in such unaccustomed venues as home-improvement outlets, office-supply stores and discount chains.

...

Electronics specialist Circuit City became a casualty of the battle yesterday, reporting a third-quarter loss triggered by rapid price declines on big-screen TVs. ...

...

Not only did the electronics chain withstand Wal-Mart's initial onslaught, it has continued to gain share. After Wal-Mart publicly crowed about its plan to offer a glitzy Panasonic plasma high-definition TV set for $1,294 the day after Thanksgiving, Best Buy fired back by offering the same TVs for $1,000 and calling it an "unadvertised special."

...

The chain now accounts for about 35% of the flat-panel TVs 37-inches wide and larger sold in the U.S., a greater share than any other retailer. That even exceeds Best Buy's past dominance in sales of conventional TVs.
...

In addition, the chain has curbed sales policies such as easy returns that attracted discount-oriented shoppers, and its clerks are trained not to let a customer leave without hearing a service-plan pitch. It has also honed its financing advantage. Best Buy's computer systems at its customer-service desk can approve a customer in seconds for up to 36 months of no-interest financing for a $5,000 home-theater system.

It isn't just in TVs that Best Buy is grabbing share. Dell's share of home personal-computer sales has fallen this year because Best Buy, the largest seller of Hewlett-Packard Co. home PCs, treats the box itself as a loss leader, making most of its profit from selling installation, antivirus software and video-card upgrades. Best Buy's share of consumer laptop PC sales this year has climbed to 15%, compared with just 2.6% at Wal-Mart. Dell is still the market leader, with a 26% share, but that's down 10 percentage points from a year ago.

...

..."They don't have a demographic that wants to buy the better products, he says. For instance, Sharp Corp., the world's largest marker of liquid-crystal display sets, yanked its sleek Aquos LCD line from Wal-Mart earlier this year after an unsuccessful debut. ...

Wal-Mart has said it is adding Sony Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. flat-panels in the near future. A Samsung spokesman said the company is selling one flat-panel and one conventional tube TV at a limited number of Wal-Mart outlets. Sony is testing sales at Wal-Mart, offering a single model each of rear-projection and LCD TVs at some stores. ...

Blu-Ray production increases

Looks like Blu-Ray player prices should be coming down too. Now all you need is a 1080p TV.
